I have an ATI Fire GL T2 128 and the hardware renderer works just fine.

We have FireGL X2 cards here at the office, and we have experienced problems with the h/w renderer quite a lot.

I'm planning to buy a notebook that's has ATI graphics chip in it, should I buy it for using Maya?

I have a mobility raedon x700 in my laptop, and hardware rendering is basically a no-go zone. Yes, it works a little if you turn off high quality lights, and expect no hardware shadows, but else it buzzes and pops like a atari on the turn. If this is your only maya machine, and you will be requiring the HQ hardware a lot, then, be warned.

I have an ATI FireGL X1-256p and it also has problems hardware rendering (either the renderer or the buffer, doesn't matter). It usually causes maya to crash.
