I have been wanting to use a kind of effect I have seen around recently and was wondering if anyone knew how o recreate things like this.

It uses what appear to be 2d animated graphics on a 3d plane. Kind of like the sepal effect holograms you see in movies, however these are often animated on a rather lovely looking background with a sort of high tech modern graphic feel to it.

http://www.knife-party.net/flash/barry.html is an example though I am trying to create something that looks a little more sleek (not that that’s not sleek in its own way). Its just the little things that confuse me like when the missiles hit the tanks and they explode into more tanks…it all looks so 2d even though you can tell its 3d; or the way the globe spreads out…how are these kind of effects achieved?

Its difficult to explain exactly what I am trying to achieve but I am sure most of you know what I mean? So anyone knows where I can get started?

have you tried rendering your 3D out using Maya Vector in your global renders? That'll start to give you that really graphic look to your 3D.
Also most of that stuff is most likely illustrator elements composited into AE, using a 3D camera.
