Tape it for us, will you? We can spread the server load between us for the videos or something if you like.

I would be glad to host a video should one become available.

So that would be server load divided by two. That's not too bad for a start. Maybe pmG can host it too. Now we only need someone to tape the darn thing. :lightbulb

Hi guys,
Just giving you guys an update.
There was a huge technical problem with the hotel gear interfacing wih the PMG computers so Taron's demo was cut short, very short like 85%. So it really wasn't anything to show, Taron did show some cool animation he has worked on and hopefully he will post that. But it was like the hotel gods did not shine favorably on the crew and as for videotaping the other presenters, it was a "no-no" from their perspective houses. Pixar, Walt Disney & Dreamworks wouldn't allow the demos to be taped.

It was however a fantastic 4 hour show and should not be missed in future siggraph events. :hmm: :argh:

OMG - sometimes I think those guys must have the baddest luck I've seen in all my lifetime.
Sponsoring an event and then fail to be able to really show your app because of such crap...

yeah.. it was nice to actually see Fori, I was like where is this "short, japanese guy"?

ehhehehhhehhhehhh (You'll have to see Fori to get that joke.)

Yeah, the event was nice and Taron new movies will be great to check out, he had to sped thru his "People" scene. I was starving (only eating sugar cookies) so I was slightly out of my 3d mind that I actually didn't ask half the questions (and I had so much just Character animation question for Jason, Carlos and the guest speaker: Andrew Gordon - Pixar animator veteran) that I wanted to ask him but I spoke to Ron and that was really kool about whats coming down the pipeline and no I can't say (partial because he couldn't really devulge the good stuff) but they are working hard on the "next level" and that got me hyped.

It was a better setting than being on the showroom floor and I hoped they sponsor next years as well as any other animation annual events.

Hey Taron, why don't you just tape your presentation in some darkroom and post, the alien thingy and your workflow would still be appreciated and don't forget to post the new Basicshader (which is better at the SSS stuff, guys).

I also attended the Siggraph event. Some amazing stuff from those animators. Learned so much. Though videotaping was verboten, I saw a couple of people doing it surreptitiously in the back. I wouldn't be surprised to see it pop up somewhere as a clip somewhere.

What PMG did present was pretty impressive, though I couldn't stay for part 2. The crowd was mostly character animators and TDs, and the part I saw Taron do was about Zbrush and his remarkable normal/bump displacement work (like I said, I missed the tech snafu and the first part of the PMG presentation, so they may have done some awesome character animation stuff, but people around me who walked in around the time I did were grumbling about wanting to see more of the workflow for character animation and less of the rendering side.

Still, defiinitely the best "event" I went to at Siggraph besides the Electronic Theater, which was fantastic. Thanks PMG. I learned more there from those animators than I ever have anywhere else.

So did pmG actualy announce anything at sig? I was only there for Jason and Carlos's talk so I figured I missed out on any big announcement.

Shame on the no videotaping but that wasn't a surprise. I know Shawn was taping Jason and Carlos for Animation Mentor so at least that one wasn't surreptitious.

Hopefully they let Lyle back out of the cave soon to talk of what he is working on.

No big announcement. We're working on stuff, of course, but we're not ready to announce. We WILL have a version "b" update very soon though.

I talked to a couple of the guys from PMG. They said "soon" (maybe they even said next couple of weeks) they would be introducing an "update". I pressed them on what would be in the update and they were a little vague. So it means either it's just a minor maintenance thing or maybe they were being coy, and it's going to be huge.

Look at it this way, they're a company, and like every 3D company they have to introduce paid upgrades to maintain cash flow. They can't JUST maintain their company on sales of new units. Unless they're all a bunch of trust-fund kiddies at PMG, I figure they've got to come out with something pretty soon.

For me, I'll just be the broken record that says please PMG, put your efforts into more learning resources for your product. At the Siggraph bookstore (one of the coolest sites there) there was an entire table devoted to books on learning MAYA character animation. I could hardly get to it because of the crowds. The hunger for learning resources from upcoming MAYA artists is no greater than the hunger from upcoming Messiah artists (like myself)!

I'm with you Robert. While obviously there is still a lot that could improve in messiah I wish they would stop dead in their tracks and do some better tutorials to help people get a better grasp on the toolset. I am baffled as to why no one in the past year hasn't just sat down and video taped Taron at work. No one could spare a week here and there to do this? Every time he shows something with even a small amount of information, it helps everyone improve which shows off even more the power of messiah. Fred said he would do that in a few weeks so I am glad it is finally being got to.

Most of PMG was at the Taron's Zbrush presentation on Thurs, and I got to talk to them and Fred said that they'll get Taron in a darkroom finally and get some tutorials out of him. I am pressing for more character pipeline stuff but I spoke to Taron and he says he will try to put up a tutorial concerning the new "baby" images on the newly designed PMG site. That SSS effect on him is from his latest basic shader that suppose to be in "b" update.

Yeah, Jason is a great guy and he really helped me to solved my arm IK problem from my 2 month old sitting up animation and answered just general question about his "flow".

yeah The guy next to me was a Tippett Studio animator and grabbed one of messiah demo, he loved how Taron's tree hag model was positioned in SETUP mode and wrote down almost everything Taron had said on the displacement and mouth setup. I think most of everyone there would have wanted to see the character side of messiah, it was probably new to them.

Yeah, it was too bad that Taron didn't get to show more. :( ...but what he did show before and after the talks was fantastic!!!

It was great to meet the pmG crew, along with Logan and Julez4001. I haven't been using m:s lately (bad me!), but thishas inspired me to get back on it!

This presentation made my SIGGRAPH trip all worth while!!! We gotta have this again next year! The speakers are amazing and totally inspiring! Hopefully, Shawn Kelly will show some of his footage.

Also, Brian... congrats on being the AnimatinMentor featured student - saw it in the AM newsletter! It was great to meet you at the AM Q&A (I was the guy standing next to you while you were filming) ;) Hopefully I will be attending AM classes soon!
