That's a very general question. There are many techniques to make trees depending on what it's for, how close it's going to be viewed, is the camera going to have to move? etc etc There's everything from tree plugins to flat planes, to modelling basic branches with lots of intersecting spheres with leaves mapped on them.

there's a nice description on how to make tree's with leaves and branches moving slightly in the wind on that 'rustboy'-site ... it's not MAXspecific and - to be honest - it's a little workaround, but it looks just plain awesome !

For trees that do not need to be seen closeup, tree factory does a pretty good job. http://www.digimation.com/asp/product.asp?product_id=181

I've used OnyxTree/TreeStorm for MAX and it does a great job...currently checking out SpeedTree. For purpose of getting trees done and done fast, with interaction with the environment, I suggest getting a plugin...unless you of course have alot of time to kill. Most of the tree plugs have a demo you could download to try out.

If you can't afford Onyx Tree storm, you should give this one a try, it's free, and the output is great: http://www.scriptspot.com/download.asp?ID=870&inf=1
