View Full Version : Recommendations for a digital camera?

Hey guys. I'm heading off to SIGGRAPH and found an interesting thread talking about the legality of bringing a camera to SIGGRAPH and thought that I should do so. Problem: I don't have one. Is there any camera that you guys might recommend (please keep price under $350)?

I love my Canon Powershot A95 5 Megapixel Camera for a point and shoot. It has a nice selection of shooting modes and a swivel screen which is great for holding it above your head to get shots while standing in crowds. Uses CF cards and alkaline or NiMH rechargeables AA which is nice because if your rechargeables die you can just throw 4 AAs in and your good to go. You can find it for around $300 US or less.
Best Buy for 300
Circuit City for 255 after rebate

depends what you're going to use it for...
have a look on www.stevesdigicams.com (http://www.stevesdigicams.com) for reviews.
he has a best buy section that's pretty good.
there are plenty of other camera review sites around.
i got a konica minolta a200 about 8 months ago and i'm very pleased with it, although i think it might be above your price range - although prices may have dropped since i bought mine...

I love my new sony cybershot w5 because:
* 5 mp
* You can start taking pictures 3 seconds or less after you press power. (thi is a big plus for me)
* BIG lcd screen.
* Camera small enough...
* ...but not unpractical small.
* Below $350

I love my Canon Powershot A95 5 Megapixel Camera
I'm gonna have to second this one - just bought mine about 2 months ago along with a 512MB Corsair CF Card, and a few conversion lenses from http://www.bugeyedigital.com (http://www.bugeyedigital.com ) and I'm VERY happy with it. Crisp pictures, fully automatic/maunal control, its great so far.

Hi, for the most balanced features in terms of image quality, zoom, price and style it's the Canon PowerShot SD500 Digital which has 7.1 MP and 3x zoom. It's $349 here:
The Sony Cyber-shot DSC-P200 has 7.2 MP, 3x zoom, is less priced but has lesser image quality.
Casio Exilim EX-P505
Personally after knowing each camera's features and price, I feel I like the Canon more, since it's within budget anyway and also because image quality is the most important feature, since that's the main purpose why you buy the cam is the images, the others are secondary. The image quality, once you buy a cam, you can't remedy it if the quality isn't good for you, the zoom, you could always go nearer and the battery you could get an extra one, the same reason for the memory cards.
