How would you model this paintball gun's complex curvature's?
Larry Schultz would most likely say to use splines.

Anyone want to take a stab at saying if this can be done in
CAD package like SolidWorks or PRO/e and roughly how you
would do it?

I would use subpatch and beveling and smooth shifting, etc.

First answer would be as you mentioned Larry would say - Use splines to layout the basic form. :)

However, looking at the image, I would also consider detail-up modelling it - That is, create simple base geometry using points to create basic polygons using the imagery as reference (preferably get some ortho views like side, top, etc), with plenty of Extender to generate extra geometry. I'd sculpt it 'roughly' (Knife, bandsaw, etc, etc), making sure I created the main areas and curves.

Once I had the basic form modelled, I would then subpatch and add in the detail with the usual tools (bandsaw, etc).

You'd be surprised how the detail-up method can solve quite complex modelling problems easily, but it can take some practise if you're not used to laying out polys and sculpting your objects by hand. I don't do it a lot, but I've been using this method a few times in the last couple of weeks for some projects I wasn't sure how to start with success...

Spline modelling would also be a nice way to do something like this as well - You just draw the edge curves, then patch and use Subpatching detail to finish. A bit simpler and easier to grasp for some users.

Just a few thoughts there.

Kevman-

Good points and well stated. The detail up method seems
a good way to go if you aren't exactly sure what you want
it to look like and save it in stages all the way through the
modeling process so you can go back to intermediate stages
and go in a different direction with the design if you want to.
Wheras the splines lock you into a specific shape from the beginning.

Thanks,

Tom

Dude splines are for sure the way to go here....save your self some time, lay out some nice splines and patch away. Play with you patch divisions and Perp. Parallel knots/length settings to find what patches this form the best.
