Thanks so much guy's!!!

You couldn't have given better compliments!

It's all 3D. We are rendering the animation out as we write.

Nope, its not MAYA. It's Lightwave 7.5. No plugs except Hypersmooth.

The suds were made of 2 high res. hand drawn images that are slowly merging and changing and a few particle spray's.

Thanks again,

John

I kinda remember someone asking about doing a wake, and having trouble cutting portholes into their mesh. I assume that was you?
Anyway, looks great! If it is you, that's interesting you solved your issue with image maps for the wake. That's cool!
Any chance you'd share the basic setup you discovered with us other LW users? :)

Nice. I saw this image (and another) over at Evasion's HyperSmooth gallery.

It would be cool to see a tut/sample scene of how you did the water effect with HyperSmooth. :-)

3 things...

First off, having looked at the larger image, the water color changes give me the distinct impression of harbor, very dirty water, not the kind of thing I'd expect in open sea.

Second, seeing as the vessel is supposed to be going fast, judging from its wake, you may want to do motion blur, if you can afford the render time. It may not look as hot for stills, but IMO it really pays off in the final animation.

Third, although the water looks extremely convincing, the boat doesn't, lighting-wise. The light is... too directional I suppose is the best way I could describe it, and its colors aren't quite there...

BTW, I am mostly picking on details here cause, otherwise, this is some seriously good stuff, no doubt! :)

cheers
Alex

fellow 'waver here. i also have a crit about the lighting. it seems that the directional lighting is coming from two directions, that it's lit from both sides, instead of just one.

Thanks for the very nice and helpfull responses!

Cman - Yep I was the one with the porthole problem and wake questions on Newtek. Although I had to find out the wake part the hard way (drawing multiple maps by hand and animating them), making portholes was easy (credit to Splinegod). Just froze the object and started boolean ahead. I didn't find another way to do it...

CIM - Making a tutorial would be fun to do! If you want some specifics about anything please jot me a line...

Jinxo +
Lyonheart - You both are right! I should have turned down 1 light from the back. I will change that. ALso, motionblur would indeed look great but the render time is already over 10 min.

Thanks again,

Damn slick stuff, guys.

One thing that looks off to me -- this could be because of the still chosen -- is the saturation of the shadow color on the water. It looks way too deep compared to the surrounding light and color.
If you comped it in, try dropping the shadow saturation down a touch. If it's all a one-pass render (crazy foos!) then you might want to change the shadow color a little (or saturation if LW has that shadow option).

Can't wait to see the animation. Super cool!

Very nice, looks very realistic over the whole line

And as already mentioned, I think the shadow of the ship is too dark

Terrific work, excelent modelling. its not often that you see Yauchts and ships being modelled and it makes a nice change. The Bigger image wasnt much bigger it would be nice to see a really bigger one. The level of detail does look a little low on the deck of the vehicle but it all depends on how you are going to use it.

Well done

Wow! :surprised
Really nice - my first thought was: PHOTO :D
Keep 'em comin'

Ah... before I forget:

Has anyone ever looked at the first posts?
There's one question which is asked EVERY SINGLE TIME:

"Definitely Maya, aint it?"
"Which prog are you using? Maya, right?"
"Is this done with maya?"

Why is anyone expection maya? Not that I dont like Maya - used
it for about a year but HELL - i've seen nice stuff done too in other progs. :p XSI is nice, Max and even Rhino too - I personally go with LW :D

The artist makes the art - not the prog
Sorry... just HAD to say this.

PS: Yeah yeah yeah, i know - Maya is Hollywood standart, any big firm is using it.
Yadda yadda

Nice work! Looks like a product shot out of a brochure!

I'm very excited to hear that it was created with LightWave! You should submit to NewTek's LightWave gallery!

Hi,

Great stuff there...I'm sure it wasn't easy to model. I agree with the folks on better lighting. One thing you must have faced yourself, is the shortage of Hypersmooth tutorials. I think you can help many others, by sharing some of the experience you've acquired. Keep it up.

sidewing
10-28-2002, 04:45 AM
You are right about that!

Unfortunately no tutorials from HS yet, but it is coming so I heard.

I used 4 HS channels. 1 for raytracing (incidence angle via gradent ramp) and 3 bump maps (crumple - smoothfactor 2, turbulence, and a coriolis with a subtractive (50 percent) cyclone on top).
On all 4 bumps I used a incident angle ramp to make them fade out at the horizon.

Thanks,

John

Its Stunning, but I'm on Jimzip's boat (pun intended) i think the lighting looks abit awkward,

its not clear where the lightsource is

great render, very realistic, i am wondering how the animation of the wake looks tho, for that is very hard to simulate realistically, here is a good movie of a large yacht going fast and creating a wake, you might want to put in some kind of displacement map if you dont have one already, a map that simulates the swell of water behind and to the side and far behind the boat, it is very complex, and it seems you have researched it alot, but thats just an idea

oops here is the movie of the yacht:
http://www.searay.com/vr_video/Video.asp?p=2001&Cat=video&category=4&Model=680SS
if that link doesnt work just go to searay.com and go to the largest model and watch the video, so beautiful!!!!

Yep. I agree with all the above. Including the light problem. If it isn't too late...

Looks like an indoor studio setup on the lights, not bright sunlight with massive reflection off the water.

Post the animation when you get done. I think we all want to see it.

I'm making the changes now and will post it soon. Thanks for all the responds so far!
Especially the lighting setup point is what I agree with.

I also will make a small tutoral of how to make the foamy suds. Still am trying to make it look more real.

Thanks again,

John
