Hello guys,

I haven't opened a thread in a long time. Now it is time again to ask the messiah community for advice again.

I am rigging this panther and I did it so far with the quadruped technique Joe uses in his Rigging 2 CD (plus a few extra bones and muscles). Well, I just started basically, but I am already unsure if I should give the model back to modeling as is.
The model is a low poly mesh that is further refined in zBrush, but either it is the placement of my bones or the geometry of the model (or both). Take a look for yourself. The mesh gets attached to the bones (of course that's why they are bones), instead of just sliding above the skelettal structure. I thought of setting the slip to a low value and attaching a spherize effect to the according bones instead. Any ideas how to improve the deformations?

Oh, and I tried to do the back as an IK chain but failed. Is there something I missed? Whenever I made the marked bone a goal and the other mark an anchor the model jumps to an undesirable position. Any ideas?

For better testing this is the whole thing I am working on.

How I wish John Riggs would finish his tutorial DVD. One of the rigs he was going to teach was a cat rig which can be viewed on his OpenGL demo reel (http://www.jriggs.net/DemoReel.htm). It's so nice. But it seems he's extremely busy at Digital Domain .... so, the messiah knowledge may remain locked up in his head for some time. :(

Come on! No one? Where are all the great rigging gurus? I know you exist, I have seen you at work in this forum before! :cry:

Hi Alex, I wish I could be of more help ... but my rigging abilities are not of the guru level. I'm not sure if you have a deadline or not ... but, I did speak to John Riggs and he seems motivated to finish what will probably be his last tutorial CD on messiah rigging. It will purportedly include the cat rig which is featured on his demo reel. So, let's cross our fingers in the meantime ... :)

Well, not exactly on a deadline, but my modeller/animator depends on this rig, so it is more of a personal deadline (which could transform to a real deadline anytime our prospective customer sees a final render of the cat with fur). So yes I am quite pressed in time unfortunately. :banghead: But how else could it be?
Good to hear though that John is going to finish his tutorials.

Hi Alex. Did you checkcalculation order (I think the back IK should be calculated before the other IK chains?!?) of the IK Expression ?

@Chickega
This cat rig looks awesome :thumbsup:

If you're really desperate, just call ;-)
But as far as I can see it just needs some more work...

Best of luck,

We slowly see some light. We decided to tackle it from two different sides at once. The panther still tries to squirm out, but we have it in a firn grip and are slowly taming him. :wip:
But thanks for your kind offer Thomas and SpikeWorx.

@Chikega: That cat really looks awesome. Maybe it was all we needed after all. Many thanks for the hint. :D
