View Full Version : Dyson style motion trails.
R1PPER 07-17-2005, 04:50 PM Hi guys im currently working on a scalextric animation WIP and need some help...I really want some trail backs coming from the back of the cars, maybe 2 or 3 times the lenth of the cars and to weave and track realisticaly around corners.
Any ideas where to start...i figured ill start with a some noise and gradient in an alpha map but not sure how to get it to bend around corners automatically? So far the cars are following a spline with tweeked f-Curve for variation?

I would go for particles with visible lights as particle objects. Just animate the visible lights in diameter to make the trail shrink and/or go darker over time/distance

I saw someone do Akira style headlight trails using skectch and toon. It might have been from HypaTV. It worked in the render very well.

any idea how he did it?

it looks like he's attached particles to b-spline vertices and used CPT particle tracer to generate spline trails over time. If you do not have CPT, sketch and toon has an inbuilt particle trail render method. Obviously this method will not use geometry.

Thanks for the imput guys...if anyone wants to knock something up really quickly and post the file feel free. :D

Kind of on a similar track (pun!),
Wouldn't Trapcode's 3D Stroke for AE do it?
BTW- Can one still get CPT?

I'm pretty sure hypaTV just used motion trails- a feature of sketch and toon - to make those trails (no particles). He also made one where there were dashed lines with arrow heads following objects in 3d and it was made with S+T.
I don't have S+T here at the office otherwise I would try to post a screenshot. If you do have S+T, you can certainly do it that way. If you have Core Particle tools, check out Neon Ghost's sugestion.

No, I'm pretty sure this one was done with CPT.

It appears the talented hypaTV did it both ways:
This one was done with CPT:

Here is the page with everything on it:

I also swear I saw a motion trail with a smooth gradient done in sketch and toon.

Also check out lumen. You can make cool light trails with that:

We've gotta take care of our own!
I love light trails and cool fx like that. Coolness. I hope all this helps the original poster!

Thanks for the help guys hopefully I will try to get my head around trail backs when ive finally finished modeling my latest animation WIP. Still need to model the damb thing and add tons of detail, I feel alittle sick just getting this far....but at least the cars follow the spline correctly. Heres an early taster ;)

Hi R1pper! Very cool looking scene you're setting up there. Looking forward to seeing the end result, and how you tackle the motion trails.

That looks awesome! Since you use splines to let the cars drive around (if I got that right) you could use LUMEN to create the trails. LUMEN has a spline function that let's you generate lights along a spline (you can decide how many lights are needed) and use a gradient or LUMEN Streak to create a nifty light effect. Would like to see your project in action!
