OKAAAY here is how this is gonna work first ill teach u to some important tools, then were gonna doodle, then were gonna shade and colour and then were gonna do materials...and tons of other useful stuff, so buckle up were taking off:D

first thing s first i noticed many fail to notice where the other brushes and brush settings are located, so to clear that up

okay u got the tools now lets get it on

STEP ONE- DIGITAL DOODLE

never underestimate the power of a digital sketch, it is the thing that will shape ur pen tablet motorical skills...unless u r one of those who have that lcd tablet thingie. now us mortals may have a handicap but it just seems so in the start. u need the doodle to also make ur moves more conntrolled and more fluent, so i would appreciate seing ur doodles pouring in:D keep it simple and fast, mind the structure
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y215/lynndeluctes/tut1.jpg

ceresz
07-16-2005, 07:59 PM
thanks for the tips, i will show you my doodles soon:D

nebezial
07-16-2005, 08:07 PM
okay now its time to define some important stuff. how often u wondered why is it that ur picture just doesnt have the realism u aimed for... as if something is missing, u laid the shadows propperly...materials work fine but it s still missing something

that something is called GLOBAL ILLUMINATION
it is a phenomena of the dispersed no direction reflected light that is cast on the object, it is well known in 3d art that illumination creates soft fleshy shadows in the depression areas of the object
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y215/lynndeluctes/TUT5.jpg

ceresz
07-16-2005, 08:14 PM
thank you, as soon as i have enough doodles i'll post them:D
i'm going to save every doodle i make from now on.

nebezial
07-16-2005, 08:15 PM
several more to go:D now as i said there are deppression areas, and as we know the hardest to make convincingly is human face so i made a lil mapout of depression areas

(sorry i suck att spelling and typing with a keyboard:Di'm such a messy typer:D)

nebezial
07-16-2005, 08:32 PM
well now well do directional lights, u see the best realism comes with combining both directional and global light

now some facts, sun is a so called parallel light source. it casts paralel shadows which makes them predictable and possible to calculate. i have learned for myself that there are two best ways to do a shadow study for a person. but remember that sun is a paralel lightso allways set the light soutce and then draw paralel lines on the endpoints, that u should do on simplified versions one way is a free simple croqui or a quick doodle:D
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y215/lynndeluctes/TUT2.jpg

nebezial
07-16-2005, 08:36 PM
the other way to approach shadow analysis is to geometrise your motif

ceresz
07-16-2005, 08:50 PM
Yeah I set the blender, the pnly problem with it is that it takes time too load when you do something, what strenght do you use?

NOOB!
07-16-2005, 08:51 PM
interesting point about the colour setting on the brush,i knew that wud come in handy for sumthin, now i know what.

maybe i shud start my stuff out in grayscale to begin with too...although i'm not keen on changing my work flow, but i guess i gotta take risks!!!

keep it up steve.

ceresz
07-16-2005, 08:53 PM
i have always loved working in grayscale first, it helps me think about the shapes instead of color.

nebezial
07-16-2005, 09:00 PM
Skurai one low on the blender is that it devours ur grephic card i use 100% cause then it turns photoshop into oil on canvas, here s the thing, use smaller size for the strong pressure and larger for featherlike fine blend, ull get it dont worry, what configuration are u using?
NOOB! yeah colour mode gets rid of that annoying grayscale residual uglyness
Skurai indeed, it keeps the mind on one problem

ceresz
07-16-2005, 09:03 PM
Thanks, I just realised it helped when i did it in the direction of the strokes on at a time.

nebezzz........Give u a buddy Huggie here! U KEEP UR PROMISES HERE!.

Amazing tutorial! I neva expect of Global illumination is a technique to cast on our painting objects to looks more "ALIVE"...Now i understand this term more deeply. And the light source is so far the simplest & short-cut for beginner.

Question: the Grey painting will be Keep under layer, rite? then Another COlor brush will be happen above Grey painting Layer, correct? I saw ur words. I just need double confirm.

Btw, i got confusion in "Geometry on motif". Do u haf a common explanation method for noobs?
Ok, Let me save down & read a few times more. Lotsa New Art definition i neva come across.

DArn appreciate ur personal precious techniques here. This is by far the best tutorial wif simple english for ppl like me. THANX MAN...

commodore: U make sense wif dat...Forum-merging. Easier for us to browse inside the sub-forum better than go back the Main page.

Nebezial:Hey, thanks very much for this tutorial. I just... Don't know this thing - when you make a grayscale picture and... when it's ready - what do you do than - colorize it? I have never used a grayscale, because I have never known how.

And I am not sure that I understand that what you said about smudge tool, could you make some examples please?

But how does one explain the edge of the face to be darker than the rest?

Wow Nebezial, you are just amazing. I thought your Master Servant entry was very masterful, but your sketches show even more masterful work. The Conan work has great muscle work, personality, and lighting. I will check out the tutorial when I have time because I'm just blown away by how good you are. Good luck finding work in the comic biz. I think you can do it.

Something I read from an over-achiever that may help you. I read that it's one thing to be very good. But even when you are very good opportunities don't really come to a person. The person still has to go out looking for it with all his or her energy, instead of just waiting for someone to show up with a job opportunity. Because I don't know what you are doing in life, you may already be looking hard for it. In that case I hope you get what you wish.
I'm hopeful that you will be a big hit in the future if not already.

thanx everyone for visiting this thread and i have to point one thing out WERE JUST WARMING UP.:D NOW ILL ANSWER THE QUESTIONS AND I GOTTA GO MAKIN MORE HEHEHE
dinodog_Jr (http://www.cgtalk.com/member.php?u=16345) vbmenu_register("postmenu_2469913", true); u see im trying to simplify things, it is a practice that is far more useful to work without layers, trust me ill show it all mate u wont be left hanging
by geometry i mean to recognise the very basic simplified shapes, cylinders spheres boxes, they help keep it clear while both working the proportions and defining shadows
ps and i use the cheapest possible tablet lol genius wizard pen... around 50 bucks in price but in my opinion its enough
Mirwen (http://www.cgtalk.com/member.php?u=92230) vbmenu_register("postmenu_2470049", true); colouring is started bxy first setting the brush to COLOR mode and go over the whole image, that is the key of getting rid of the whole residue grayness then tweaking is done in HARD LIGHT mode which i will explain
and the smudge tool, well if u got photoshop CS just use those settings i wrote and turn it into an ultimate blender,,ull see, its a lil hard on the graphic card though but unbeatable
Seratogui (http://www.cgtalk.com/member.php?u=174990) vbmenu_register("postmenu_2470260", true); ull see why i made that shadow, u see im taking it step by step and that step was made to show depressions on womans face, there is a tut about the full illumination with reflective illumination:thumbsup:
snowkiwi (http://www.cgtalk.com/member.php?u=24581) vbmenu_register("postmenu_2470514", true); zo im not worried ill just do my best u see im a fighter that NEVER quitts and im doin ok as a freelancer but i have my dreams
NOOB!...lol spammin eh really it makes me think ms too:D

Whatever is going on I'd just like to say thanks. I'm wanting to learn digital painting...:D you guys have no idea how useful your info is to me!!!

I'll have to find time to do all these great tutorials. :D

I have a question though, do you find a lot of advantages in working in layers so as to have separate ones in ard light mode for instance? Or does that complcate things too much?

thanks !

*pokes everyone* This is a very good tut, love your style and this gives some insight in how you work so i think i'll try it out! errmmmm... that's if... i manage to get my hands on Photoshop CS, although some things/techniques should be usuable with Painter... so... hummm... yes! I will try it! :D
Keep it up!

Guys / Gals,

Just so it's clear, here is a link to and the actual information regarding the posting of TUTORIALS which I wrote earlier today in the ANNOUNCEMENTS (http://www.cgtalk.com/showthread.php?t=258100) thread: #11 (http://www.cgtalk.com/showpost.php?p=2470361&postcount=11)

EVERYONE,

POST TUTORIALS! POST TUTORIALS!

I encourage anyone and everyone who has a TUTORIAL to share to post it ~ as it contributes greatly to our community.

Thank you for your posts :)

~Rebeccak

EDIT:

For some of you, the term "MODERN MASTERS" may be intimidating, and I do not want some silly term to preclude people from posting their tutorials.

If you feel more comfortable, feel free to just post your TUTORIAL on the main Artistic Anatomy and Figurative Review (http://www.cgtalk.com/forumdisplay.php?f=177) thread and call it TUTORIAL *what it's about* by *your name*

EVERYONE has something to offer to the community here, and I hope you will share it with us!

Thank you :)

I have just managed to have a go at the blending technique. The computers at my college have Photoshop CS. It's brilliant!! Thanks Nebz!!

I tried that too... the effect looks really nice but is it normal thats so extremly slow ?
I can do only a stroke per second and my PC isn't that bad.

aylien
07-18-2005, 02:15 PM
...and I dont really get how to setup the blender thingy... i makes kind of very jitterish result for me. Can anyone show their setting with a screenshot and how the result is supposed to look?

thx for the great stuff

Blatt
07-18-2005, 02:50 PM
I am quite sure that the slow Blender is a effect of our lame systems ...
Here it's pretty slow too, but I could fix that ... try to set the Count Setting
from 10 to 5 .... it is not exactly the same Blender but nearly the same.

Your computer only have to manage half of the processes with these
settings, by nearly the same result ... try it :)

By the way ... all brushes above 100 r killing my computer, so dont try that
blender with large brushes and expect a fluid workflow.

When using the blender settings I get when doing fast streaks just a string of round shapes instead of a fluent line, so I wondered if this was normal.

Skurai sorry mate had to work today, but tomoorrow theyre comin
jmBoekestein suit urself it has its faults and advantages:D
naresh more tomorrow
Trignom well this is still just the intro stuff the good stuff is on the way after the tomoorrows batch
enialadam did u try a larger brush with a featherlike pressure for the ultra sweet blending, it is awesome
sergioKomic tons:)
Vyse_soa i know it depends on the computer, it is a torturer buth worth it, try decreasing count its a trick thet works, it will look grainier but u can solve it by powering up ur blur tool and ull do so by switching the settings from smudge and there ULTRABLUR IT WILL SUPERTWEAK THE GRAININESS AND IS WAY MORE POWERFUL THAN STANDARD
aylien TRY DIFFERENT PREASSURES, CHECK IF U HAVE OTHER DYNAMICS ACTIVATED

damn caps lock
Blatt yes i started with count 6 initialy but found my optimum on 10
InesD no prob, more tomorrow
Prs-Phil dont worry well do them both... buuut ill make u reconsider the grayscale, ull see how simple it is:D

say nebezial,
what kinda system are you running at? also for your canvas in PS, what size of document do you usually work in?

i usually go about 120 ppi, and have to stay in a 800x400 pixel canvas, unless i want my system to right stop working. thanks for the tutorials.

Seratogui probably the spacing under brush tip shape, which brush are u using, only scatter and other dynamics must be acrivated

Soft Round 21 1, only those two are on, 39/10 in scatter settings and I get the string of round shapes instead of a fluent shape, but only when I do fast lines. When I do incredibly slow lines, they somehow seem to merge.

enialadam: you can blow up different facial parts or change their shape ...easy way to try this is to make a basic greyscale face and try to make the nose bigger. :D

u can either shape the parts in a certain direction with the liquify brush or just blow it up with the blow up tool ... just dont use too small brushes as it gets very wobbly on outlines... u can correct wobbly edges afterwards with the blender again tough ... hope that helps a little.

Its a good way to balance out facial proportions as well

ok this time i put some more effort into making a good base mesh ... im not really happy with it as yours look much simpler nebz..but its way better than the one before :D

I used one shade of darker grey to doodle the face then i tried to get the shapes and shades with your blender .. occasionally throwing in some more white. Then i used the dodge and burn tool to get some highlights and some sharper dark lines.

then i changed the base mesh twice with the liquify tool ... man this is fun :D :D :D

http://img118.imageshack.us/img118/431/nebztech37kj.jpg

how do you start when making your greyscale ? do you use different shades of grey & white before you start blending ? or just one shade of grey and take the white from the canvas ?

a brush with zero resaturate and some bleed works great as a blender!
and, as far as I´ve seen nebz workflow can just as easy be done in painter except you have to use a different blender.
Or have I missed something fundamental? :)

Hi Stjepan

Your tutorial and painting technique has inspired me immensely.
I consider that to be a great gift, so Thank You.
I did this painting to try to be of some help, however small it may be to those people using painter, that are trying to master your technique.
I used very similar technique as yours.
Started out with gray half tone drawing.
About 95% liquid lens brushwork to bring life to the drawing.
The rest I did using watercolor tints and glazing brushes, Painter 8.
And the "just add water" brush for blending from Painter 5.
Hope this painting is of some help.
Trying to give you some inspiration back.
Remember what I said, Keep studying Reubens.
Take care and thanks for teaching and sharing. It is a great thing to do and you should always be proud of it.
Glenn

edit: made a very small one. Just showing how easy it is to use. http://onlinewarriors.beyondunreal.com/RandomStuff/Draw1-1.avi right click save as. It holds your hand when doing all the steps this program is really nice. Oh yeah it is 10.mb

Odd Must be one of those odd avi ones :| Either way I am going to do a tut. I am thinking of doing a detractive drawing. Where you place a black background and only worry about the highlights buy erasing or using a light color. Ill make the rest into quicktime instead since that can be played everywhere.

yea Skurai from Finland and back in the old days everybody
was taught Swedish too, only I never learned it well at all,
I only understand some of the more simple sentences like
the ones you posted.

Then I was put into Finnish-Russian school where i learned
even less russian and thus know nebz words cause they're
very similar to the russian ones. Yea I can walk around
Helsinki and secretly listen to all the russians saying stuff
like "I" , "you" , "come on!" , "cat" , "dog" and "airplane" in
their own language, hahaha

nice, a movieclip says more than a thousand pictures :)
although, a little more speed would be nice, there´s no need to see every stroke you do :)
using "normal" speed when you do certain details could perhaps be even more educational.
great initiative!

Hello nebezial, this is an AWESOME thread you've got going here, I hope you don't stop anytime soon! Very helpful :D

But I have a question about the blender. I'm using Photoshop 7, and created a new brush (had to do it with the brush tool selected) with your settings. I then switched to smudge tool and grabbed out the newly created brush.. and it seemed to work. Can anyone confirm if this works or no? I have no way of telling, since i'm not really sure how the CS blender works compared to the blender I made in 7.

PS: Do you have any sketches or advice on 3/4 views for the human head? I always get mine wrong, and don't really know where to start.
