EDIT: k.. Here is a very quick example of that blender tool being used in ps7. Using your pallet on page 14.

I'll try to get some nicer (less blurry) examples up later, that don't follow your tutorial so closely :scream:

Cool tuts nebz :) Now i see how you get that sweet muscular separation. I had a very hard time with that when working with the doppelganger. But i tried this bluring by blocks method and it rocks.

Here is i little cartoon i just made in opencanvas with your method.

Keep it rocking baby!!

venomai awesome u made it man, i didnt have much time to do it in 7 and u solved the problem, congrats, good use of the mind my friend, respect:thumbsup:
kaspaxl lookin sweet, tr using a smaller blender too it will further help define the shapes... it makes what is scientifically called... the fleshy goeyness lol
Skurai make the veins sharper, and then blend in the words of fifty cent... just a lil bit, on the uppre side, that is in this case the one facing the light. u r really improving and the skin tones are gettin deeper.

I recently got hold of CS2 but for some reason i keep having problems with it, especially when using the smudge tool...the program just freezes. Seems like lots of people keep having this problem. Anyway I've gone back to Photoshop 7 which works fine and these are my settings for blending:

Uncheck spacing under brush tip shape
Shape dynamics: Angle Jitter 100%

Other Dynamics: Strength Jitter control to Pen Pressure

I found them on stickydoodle.com (Peachysticks as some of you may know her)

I don't if they're the same settings as what venomai made. But I compared it to the blender Nebz uses and it's not too bad, almost as good I'd say :)

Oh yes more tuts !! More fun to go !
That really is a pleasure to learn some of your techniques. Here is a thing where I'm testing around your moves, thx again.
http://perso.ipvset.com/%7E%20marie-jeanne.gatefoin/Gentelman.jpg

Made with PS Cs 2, by the way no prob with the smudge tool even working on a Duron 600 Mhz, I just added more cache in the preferences and that worked.

Exellent tutorials, nebezial :)
I'm learning more from you and your tutorials than I ever did from my Art Instructors at college. (which either says a lot about you as an artist ;) or that my teachers just don't know enough  )

Hi Nebezial/Stjepan
Little contribution, hope it helps your tutorial.
Started with yellow, then orange water color tints
over black and white half tone drawing.
Went into it with the glow brush, then covered lighted
areas with purplish white and whitish pink oil tints
and glazes. Hit it a little with the blend and blur bursh.
Used liquid lens brushes to shape and reshape and
push the surface and paint around and for sharp
crisp edges.
The blend and blur brush gives a nice green copper
color. The glow brush gives a nice red orange luminous
color. The purplish white gives a nice cool shadow.
Hope this is of some help for people using painter
who want to learn your style of painting.
Also hope that it adds to your arsenal of color and
luminousity.
Shared knowledge can only push this style further
than it has ever been pushed before.
Take Care
Glenn

how was the blender made in 7.0??

NOOB!, I just took out the brush tool (B) and created (saved) a new brush based on the same settings Nebezial showed us in page 1. :D then I switched to the smudge tool, and changed my current brush to that new one I had just made (right click document > select brush).
I can upload this in .abr if you still can't get right. :)

I'm still not sure if it works entirely, so i'll try to test a little bit more over the next couple of days. So far it's blending a lot better than any other tool I was using though, so a big thanks for the help!!

Skurai: nice result!

nebez! Great blender skill u got der.. SUper-Fast coloring technique!

In CS, the scatter function can make a much natural mixture color, but it will cause a "Pause" due to processor issue. in Psd7 , try adjust the Strength to 50%. Then adjust the Brush Tip Shape>Hardness. This is the main thing to let us haf better Sharpness or pixelize edge in our art.

The duplicate layer of Texture emboss painting solved ALL my confusion to keep creating a NICE BRUSH TEXTURE PATTERN. I dun like to create New Brush!

p/s: Nebez, do u mind put a Tittle lesson such as "LESSON 5: HAIR & FUR."
u knw why, cuz the compliments in this thread keep flooding everyday. I dun want to miss any of ur Precious Tutorial.

Now goin to test the HAIR.. the hair trick seems can be DONE even with a MOUSE! GOD PLEASE GIVE NEBEZ A HUGGIE!

warpyy when i say reset brush i mean reset, there is a comand on the brushes rollout. ansd then u choose the 1 or 3 pixel brush and do the tiny wrinkles
rblitz7 okay i needt to know if u r using a tablet, and then i also need to know if u have the blender tool set u see as for the basic colour layout this is good id suggest more liiight yellow on the lighted areas. after that u blend and after that its wrinkling time

rblitz7: Nice work on the blending, only thing is that it's kinda blurry. I tend to just blend from the edges bringing the brustrokes that I applyed together rather than going over the whole thing. allso I vary the pressure, keeping some of the skin slightly textured, it's difficult to explain, but you'll get the hang of it :)

<edit> allso I think someone else mentioned using bigger brushes, that's a good tip ;)

Hope I helped a little...

Sweet stuff Neb's .. excellent...

I'll add a bit of my own tips here... the beveling can also be done if you simply set a blank layer to use the bevel style and set the "fill" to 0% .. note... the FILL setting to 0% ...

You couldnt hope for a more open artist! This is really helpful stuff Neb's,
its great to see some really good techniques, which you can use for so many
different things. Im really looking forward to some more tuts

And Kaylon, you mentioned earlier that you thought you knew all the techniques
Im curious, would you care to share your knowledge? I know that everyone that
has already subscribed to this thread would like to hear some, that is not to say
that Neb's isnt doing a great job already with the tuts

kaylon
08-06-2005, 09:24 PM
:) .. My painting process is actually very very close to Neb's we share a lot in common. There is very little new I could add that has not been covered. However I may put together a "texture" creation tutorial sometime in the future. But that may end up in the Game dev forum...we'll see :).

Hi,Nebs!About your textures tutorials with the bevel n emboss, instead of duplicating the layer n using the eraser,I open a new layer n set the effect to outer bevel. After I set my shading,I check the "down" option n put the fill to 0%.And instead of the eraser,I use the brush. This will keep your file size smaller.I've attached a sample of what i meen, here.
Now my question is:is this something that slipped u or have u found that the way u do it allows u to do more?I'm just curious cuz i don't think this is the kind of thing that would slip by u.
Now,just do us a favour:don't stop rocking us with your tuts!!!

No problem:thumbsup:
Nebezial, I just realised how easy har light was to use when working with skin colors after grayscale painting (i have only tried that) you just had to use the same skin color that you used to color over the gscale painting, maybe just abit mor orange, and linear dodge, wow!
awesome tool to touch up the higlights after hard light, and linear burn again wow! awesome tool to touch up the shadws adter hard light.

it think hard light, linear dodege and linear burn works best together.

well this is just what i think.

(damn i can't wait till i get a new computor, then i will be able to use the smudge tool alot better, with it's full strenght that is, mwahahaha, he, i'm weird...)

keep it up neb.

I agree with nebezial on this, sure painter is a nice program and all, but like nebezial said why not get oils etc if you wanna paint with oils?
I like photshop because then it's challenging to get the effect that you want, and the workflow is alot smoother to me, anyways that's just what i think.

I use photshop about 95% and painter5%. lol:D

nebezial
08-18-2005, 12:33 PM
well u cant really call it digital sculpting...r ... in my way...maybe ...but anyways..it still aint painting...if ur gonna go semantic on me...lets just call it digital influencing on the pixel coloration:D

kaspaxl
08-18-2005, 12:59 PM
hehe, it is painting indeed. Digital painting, Oil painting, neardental cave painting... They are all painting, just changing medium and tools used. Just because we have seen the holygrail in nebzs ultrablender tool for photoshop we don't necessarily have to change the name of what we do... :scream:

And why paint with digital oils??? Obviously, because you like the texture of them and don't want to get dirty with them! Amen to all the bonus neat stuff that traditional oils don't have. Undos, resizes, repositioning, layering, Hue, brightness, contrast, saturation control and a long etcetera.

Cheers

anyways, now i have to post...

about your workflow.. it lacks, if you are using photoshop only to sketch at start i would seriously consider doing it in painter it has many pencil brushes abilities, its well known that sometimes moving files between painter and photoshop screws things and there are probably tons of other things..

NOOB!
08-18-2005, 09:34 PM
i'm used to sketching in photoshop, mainly cos its easier to move things around, rotate etc when i make mistakes blah blah, sometimes i use alias sketcbook as well.

but i'm trying to get used to sketchin in painter at the moment

my work flow lacks? thats a bit harsh, its jus my preferred way of working at the moment,i've never had any problems, when i've done print work for books nothing seems to be effected.

and i ain't a subscriber to this thread either lol.

edit:just re-read,and i'm not using photoshop just for the sketch,i lay down the basic colour too.

hehe well warpy i actually made that just to show u my method...but now its on lol .well anyways it was my first try with catamsia to record and as u know near the end zbrush crashed, so ill make anew one from scratch. it is not really a tut i guess, more a method of fast modellinf while keeping the polcount under control.and yes that was the main reason i havent been active here

http://img120.imageshack.us/img120/1862/lvup3py.jpg

i guess this demonstrates better, it is an early phase of a model...which is allmost done now..now for that tut, there are some issues, 17 mb was a 21 minute allmost done head..if zbrush hadnt crashed it would have been a full 30 minute tut, and the quality is also doubtfiul here, but i think i can upload it from college, they have the cable internet...soo it should work, once im done with this challenge im on ill be back to photoshop tutting..and who knows..i might tke up some other prorams lol..wellanyways, ill arrange everything with my mate:D warpy here

nebezial
09-16-2005, 09:39 AM
the red lines signify the light breaking points, it is sort of a map to facial anatomy , and a set of guidelines to point out where the planimetry of face breaks, to point out whee u have the interesting light versus shadow situations, compare the gray one and the coloured one and observe what happens in the redlined areas, i think ull get it:thumbsup:

Better later than never. There's my second try in your technique.
The Blender tool is extremely usful, I have to admit, I started playing with the properties of the tools thanks to you.

been doing more of his tutorials, i wont post any pictures but you should all know that
in my opinion if you are a newb you have few steps in reaching your goal of painting good.
each step can be self dependent but can also be depend on the others.

1. learn how to draw lines/curves, yes those black lines that makes out a sketch, define your figure and scene. this process can be studied to infinity :)

2. learn how to use the grays and color in a monochromatic way, its just like neb thought us in the first few pages of this tutorial. of course this means using his blend tool is a must.

3. learn how to use the normal brush in 'color' mode and in 'hard light' mode and in 'linear light' mode. this means you are actually coloring the step 2. monochromatic scene (the gray scale one). hardlight is for shadows (i like using burn also) linear light is for hilights (i also like using dodge).

4. learn how to use 3-4 basic colors and define your figure, a limited amount of colors will give a whole range of them once you blend the scene with it, this method replaces the use of grays to define everything (Step2) and then color them using step 3.

5. actually use your palette as a real painting material, this is a combination of the blend tool with actual paint drawing, not just a splat of color or grays and then blend. but actually picking out colors and painting with them.. in my opinion this is the hardest one of all.

Eh, hey Neb. I was reading on some other thread that you found a quick method of working with layers I believe, or something of the like. I think you were talking about it in regards to coloring in comic book pages quickly or something. It wasn't your thread and someone was giving you smack for that (lol **** em, you're a god :p), but you said you'd end up making a tutorial about it later on another thread.

Did that ever come out, possibly on another thread? If not I'd appreciate if you could elaborate? I work so slow, anything would help, thanks :D

nebz,

If it limits you too much to do things at the 800 pixel size, then don't worry about it. ;) I just know that for myself, it's easier to browse when things are constrained to that size. Up to you, though. :)

Sweet! I love your tutorials Nebezial! They help out immensely! Aside from that, your style rocks! :) I think 800 pixels wide isn't a big problem, you can always make the pictures longer than 600 (gotta love that screen width ratio..) Or just make it as wide as you want and rotate the canvas so it's all sideways! (8 You might cause a lot of sore necks, but we'd still appreciate the tuts!

As for the .pdf, the last time I checked (about 3 weeks ago) it was still hosted on bandersnatch's site. It just took a bit of looking. There was a problem in the .pdf though. Some pages were in the wrong order.

I kept hoping there would be more tutorial posts in this thread, but moving on to another thread works too! Thanks everyone!

Yeah, bear in mind that I don't really mind what length posts are ~ use your best judgement ~ so, long images with an 800 pixel width might work well. Just suggestin'. :)

One other idea ~ it might be nice to create your own Anatomy Thread of Nebezial which would not be a Tutorial, but just a place to post all of your images in one place. I would set it up such that you posted "Please do not post reply" until you finished posting all of your images ~ then removing that text. This would ensure that people could view a big chunk of your work without lots of people posting intermittent replies.

It'd be a great way for people to see your work here on the forum all together as a group.

What do you think? :)

You have my respect; I’m so bad at trying to teach I would like to have that quality,

Besides your highly developed talent you have the ability to share your techniques with others, the thing is with me is I can hardly remember how I paint something from one moment to the next I’m very fluid and every time I put pen to paper I feel I do so in a very different way, I guess In a way that’s good because all my works have a sense of uniqueness to them, yet are unmistakably mine. but I would
love to have a formula witch I could pass on, people always ask me questions and I’m like “try draw a circle” I wish I could show people how I paint like you can. Even my Life Drawing lectures in college where a little puzzled at my approach, even though they liked my finished work they never quite knew how I got there. kind of strange how I learn too I don’t read texts and tutorials as such, I look and see just the images between the texts, kind of like learning a piano song from listing too a peace of music instead of learning to play from sheets of music, so I guess I see the world, see influences in nature film and other artists works and churn out my interruption of the world. That’s me I’m weird LOL is anyone else like me,.:) well what I’m trying to say thanks for the images my friend.

P.S. is there a way you can record every step you take in Photoshop CS and replay it back so you can see what you done develop in a kind of time-lapse I would love to be able to see my self back. and maybe post it up so others can watch I think that would be cool.

I love your work keep it you this is great.

Something about painting quickly or something *shrug* You already explain this?

What an outstanding thread.

Nebezial - You're really good, and benevolent too, evidently :)
Rebeccak - I have no idea what you're role is here, but I love your avatar :)

Anyway, here is a short test I did using Nebz technique.
Its a good technique, the test came out ALRIGHT:

http://www.slight-shift.com/Old/sniping.jpg

Here's the problem - I used the basic guidlines I drew all the way through, keeping their layer the topmost one, and when I remove the layer the image turns to sh!t and it looks like this:

http://www.slight-shift.com/Old/sniping2.jpg

Now - My question is:
How can I draw properly and shade according to my sketch if I draw OVER it? And if I don't, but rather draw BENEATH it, how do I keep sharp lines without having to go over the entire thing a second time?

Thanks again!

Hi Opeth,

Rebecca is the Anatomy Forum leader and the patron saint of all aspiring anatomy students around here!

As you can see from her avatar you might rather speak of her roll in this forum...harhar

Your pic is freakin awesome. I esp. like the values and light on the belly.

The disappearing line problem. If you use a multiply layer and paint beneath it: I tend to slide down the lineart layer's opacity to a very low value as I close in on the final round so I can still see the guidelines and judge the edges on the paint layer at the same time.

just my two cents

and again: great pose and picture - do something with it for the joy of the crowd:)

Opeth
01-11-2006, 11:36 AM
10x Mr. Mu. :D

I often do that as well. The problem is - what do I replace the black lines with? Nothing gives the image the same depth and cut as them, but leaving them in isn't my cup of tea.
And as for Rebeccak, Excuse my ignorance! Much obliged to you! :)

Opeth: Actually you got to blend the linework into the whole thing. I suggest you duplicate it and try to blend it in with a small blender. Just work your way inward and try to keep the dark lines on the outside. You can blend the linework on its own layer first to see how it fits .. where light hits the character the outlines can be blended more.

hope that helps .. ill try this myself now :D

I think it looks really cool ... you could try to use the brush in hard & soft light mode now with 15-30 opacity to get some more light & shadow.

Also if your unsatisfied with your edges atm ( altough i think they are pretty good now ) you could youse the burn tool with the round soft brush on low opacity on the edges.

Opeth -- I agree w/ blacker... not quite sure what you're going for because it looks good to me... But if you're still not satisfied with the line quality I would suggest throwing a backround in there, or at least a color that is close to the final backround... I think your dissapointment with the lines may be because of the stark contrast between the complex shading of the character and the completely empty (and bright white) background. just a thought.
