View Full Version : Any way to convert a Poly Mesh into Splines?
RockinAkin 10-26-2002, 12:16 PM Hi All,
My Question is weather or not there is a method to convert a mesh object into a spline cage, either from within MAX or with a plugin.
What I mean by this is taking the wireframe of the object and replacing the wireframe with a bunch of splines which can then have a surface tools applied.
Sounds reasonable enough.... but nothing on it found so far...
Thanks,

Might be tedious, but you can select a series of Edges and click ConvertToSpline.

Yeah basically select all the edges of the poly object and select make spline in the editable poly tools.
Though it'll be pretty useless unless you want to do A LOT of work later. just applying the surface modifier to this will result in an exact copy of the mesh, except with higher poly count, but lookign exactly the same, if not looking more low poly.

As Brandon says, but I think the option is called "Make Shape".

Select all edges and press 'make shape' as Matt says.. however.. you might not think it so good an idea afterwards as all vertices default to bezier on conversion. You can of course, then convert them all to smooth or corner to make them more managable , but in reality, for whatever it is you want to do, there is probably a better option. :)

depends of the mesh, but you could create spline with 3d snap tools ,-)

Just what I was looking for!
I love these new features in MAX5...
Thanks for your help all.

Don't quit understand why Booboo missed this one, cause he wrote this handy script: http://www.scriptspot.com/bobo/mxs3/mesh2surf/Mesh2Surf_011.zip
It converts a mesh or a poly object into a spline cage with just one single click.

Btw, the link doesn't work. Bobo?

Sorry for the dead link, only works with dl manager.
You can fnd it here (it's only max3 though) http://www.scriptspot.com/bobo/mxs3/#freeware
(It's under nr. 41)
I don't know if you're interested in commercial plug-ins, but there's one called Surf-IT that enhances spline modelling, and it comes with an option "Convert MESH to Spline" or something like that.
