Hi how is everyone? im pretty familar with all the tools in polygonal modeling in maya. i took a 2mths reading up on it. anyways i have no experience in actually modeling but i was wondering if perhaps some of you's out there would give me a few examples on how to model say the part of a star trek ship say the saucer section those of you that have done this before. how would i go about that create a sphere perhaps slice it in half anyways any help would be good tks

It depends partially on what kind of saucer you want to build. If its something from TOS/TMP era, then probably a revolve will do the job. If you're aiming for a TNG/DS9/VOY style you might want to look at a loft or bi-railed surfaces.

well, if you're familiar with maya's modeling tools, it really doesn't matter how you start, the thing which counts is the resulting geometry ! simply get yourself a picture of how the geometry is build up and then start tweaking ... a good idea would be inserting a picture of the ship you'd like to model as image-plane and use that as reference ...
