View Full Version : War Of the World Effect in C4D?!
Gangstashers 07-15-2005, 05:47 PM Hi evryone i have a question...
For the ppl who have seen war of the worlds or maby the trailer where you see tom cruise and ppl running around and jumping while the ground breaks and cracks... how did they make the crack? and evrything on the ground? In the making off you see tom cruise running around over plain ground and jumping over a few motiontracking things on the ground.. and in the film you see him jumping and you see the ground crack and stuff...
I know Masterzaps Volcano clip has the same sort of ground breaking effect... how can i make something like this? I have After effects And cinema 4D Also i have Adobe premiere.
I would love to know a bit in depth how its done... or maby the easiest way?!
What i think is...
1. Record somone jumping around.
2. Put that in your 3D aplication and do what?
3. Maby motiontracking with a motiontracking app?
I don't know.. but masterzap sure has the similair kinda effect..
For the ppl who don't know what im talking about check the trailers out below..

for that much money they spent - i wouldn't doubt some was done practically with a false "ground" and physical rigs between to cause the cracks and bulges - at least in many of the hero shots
some i could definatley tell were 3d composite but others did look practical to me.

Is there a partical physics plug in for cinema 4d? I've seen demos of one that simulated breaking glass, brick wall being destroyed by a wreaking ball, and so on.

While I haven't seen the movie yet (I know, shame on me!) I think I know what effect you're going for... Something like creating cracks in the ground of a live motion plate isn't something to be learned over night if that's what you're after. There is a lot of work involved. You need to learn the basic of compositing and camera tracking before worrying about something that difficult. The effect -could- be done in Cinema 4d but it would definatly take lots of trial and error, which is usually fun. :P
Something like this would be a great project to do with Cinema 4d but I would start thinking a lot smaller then profesional quality effects if you've never done anything like it. Just start tinkering with matchmoving and getting your 3d objects into a properly tracked 2d shot. Once you've got the basics of that down then start building on what you've learned. Doing something like what you want isn't just a from video to 3d application deal. There's more to it...
For a pretty affordable camera tracking application try pfHoe from http://www.thepixelfarm.co.uk/ There's also Boujou and MatchMover Pro but you don't want to see those price tags. ;)
Er, in short...yes it can be done effects wise with Cinema 4d but there's really no "You do this, this, and this." type of answer to give on the subject that will really get you started.
