I have searched cgtalk but couldn't find any good way to make a realistic grass material. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Personally, I would go outside, grab a blade of grass, scan it and use it in the diffuse channel. If the veining on the grass blade has any bump to it, make a corresponding bump map and specular map. Don't forget to give it a slight amount of transparency too.

Hope this helps.

I'd say that's just about the end of this thread

no, no, no. I am trying to get a grass material that will be used for grass from a long distance away. Yes, you have a great idea on making grass up close, but I want to make grass far away. I could use grass-o-matic but too too much polygons. I think it needs great bump map to make grass look like it stands up but I can't get it to look right. I am just asking this question to get some opinions, gain some experience and save a little time. But thanks for the imput so far.
