Hello

I received my baby today :-) The Wacom Graphire 3, and the software bundle that comes with it, is Corel Painter Essentials 2. My stupid question is - would it run interference with my currently installed Painter IX? I had a problem like this once with Paintshop Pro, it's why I am asking. There is also Photoshop Elements, which I have Photoshop v6 already installed. I just want to be sure before I actually install it - since I don't need redundant programs nor a crash at this point because I'm getting ready to play with the baby and the graphic programs I have already. I'm already in love with the cordless mouse and pen...lol

I'll post something soon as I finish it.

Thanks for any answers

Why would you want to/need to install Painter Essentials and Photoshop Elements if you have Painter IX and Photoshop 6? Essentials and Elements are "extras" that Wacom has arranged to bundle with their tablet, but they are not required if you have the full versions of the programs already.

If you already have Painter IX installed I can't see much point in using an older/limited version unless it has lower required specs and you are on an old pc.

As for PS, I have PS5 and PSElements co-existing happily together on the same PC, don't know about 6 though. I still find myself using 5 mostly because I'm used to it and it loads faster.

Either way, have fun with your new toys.

Hi,

Congratulations on being a new Graphire 3 owner! You're going to love using your Wacom tablet and Painter IX together. :)

I have five full Painter versions (5.0.3, 6.1, 7.1.357, 8.1, and Painter IX.. soon to install the Painter IX 9.1 Update) installed on my computer plus Painter Classic 1 and Painter Classic 2 and there are no conflicts. Each is installed in its own folder.

I don't have Painter Essentials installed nor do I know what it offers, but understand it's similar to Painter Classic 1 and Painter Classic 2.

If you have the hard drive space, after you've used Painter IX for a while and have a fairly good idea of what it contains, you might want to install Painter Essentials just to see if it has any nice brush variants not included in Painter IX, or any nice art materials you'd like to use in Painter IX (i.e. Papers, Patterns, etc.).

If you do find anything you want to use in Painter IX, you can rename those files to indicate they're from Painter Essentials so they won't overwrite the default Painter IX files, then copy them to the appropriate locations in the Painter IX User Folder.

You might, name copies of the Painter Essentials files beginning with PE. The Painter Essentials Papers file copy would, for instance, then be named PE_Painter.PAP (Windows) or PE_Paper Textures (Mac).

Then, if you don't find any other reason to keep Painter Essentials installed, you can Uninstall it and manually delete any remaining Painter Essentials folders and files (in both the Painter Essentials Application/Program folder and in the Painter Essentials User folder).

Since your Photoshop version is older, and I've heard that Photoshop Elements is surprisingly powerful, you might also want to install that in a separate folder from where your Photoshop 6 application is installed,to find out if it offers anything your older Photoshop version doesn't offer.

Check with more Photoshop users to make sure it's safe to have both Photoshop 6 and Photoshop Elements installed. I would think it's OK, but better to be safe than sorry.

Hi I just got my Graphire3xl (I'm very very happy with this tool) with painter essentials 2 with it, but I guess there's no point installing it if I already have full version of painter 9, is it ? C'ya.

Thank you for the replies! :-) I did think it would be redundant to install those but I was curious mostly about the Corel one; I'm not very happy with some of the brushes in the airbrush selection and wanted to see if they had more options on the extra disk. I created a few (to mimic fur strokes) but the soft air ones tend to get splotchy when I fill in skin tones

Oh yea...and I am already in love with the Tablet! heehee. I'm about 80% done on my first project ( a cheetah protrait ) and I've doing screen caps as I go along. I don't have an image host yet, so I will just upload it onto my webpage when its finished.

Thanks for the tips, JinBrown - I will look into it for those brushes.

Hi Bohemiantoe (where'd that name come from?) ;)

The Painter IX 9.1 Update has just been released and it includes a fix for the splotchy Airbrush problem.

Check the threads to learn more about the Update and where to find it (it's a free patch that includes a lot more improvements and fixes).

I saw that patch, I will try it again - I kept getting error messages last time and gave up because of the hot weather + computer = miserable, even with the a/c. I have been moving my stuff to PSP for large areas of air brush because of the splotchiness in Painter. Thanks.

My name... odd that. I was born with an extra toe on my pinky toe, which the did remove - but someone once said I was Bohemian down to my toes, and I recalled the pinky toe episode. Tada!

Hi,

Thanks for the great story about your name! My story is not nearly so interesting, nor is my name.

oh ouch! the file size for the painter patch is a doozy for dial up! lol... I will download it on a day that no one is using the phone for over an hour...lol lol

you're welcome on the name, but yours starts with Jin -- sorta reminds me of the Jinn, y'know? is that part of your *uninteresting* story? ;-)

Hi Bo (hemiantoe),

Sorry but Bo's a family nickname in my ex-husband's family and I couldn't resist.

No Jinn in my background except with a "y" at the end.

My full first name is Virginia as is my mothers. The story goes this way: When she was about 14 or 15, she read a novel in which one of the main characters (probably "the star") was named Virginia and spelled her nickname, oddly enough, with a "J" instead of the logical "G". So, being an impressionable young girl, my mother then began spelling her own nickname Jinny.

As for me, it would have been very nice to have been given my very own name, but the consolation has been that I'm the one who's called "Jin" by beloved uncles, aunts, and cousins, and good friends.

That I much prefer to hear since it's always been said in an affectionate tone, never associated with reprimands or interruptions from play only to hear that serious voice saying:

"Get in the bathtub, Virginia! Dinner will be ready in a half hour!"

You know, the kinds of things that scar children permanently. :D

That's the best story I have to offer.

That's a nifty story actually. Never would have thought.

On another forum I go to, people always use "BoToe" LOL! so that will suffice, I guess.

Hi "BoToe",

Glad you liked the story. I should add that my mother hit 90 this month and her friends still call her Jinny.

That would place her choice of the nickname around 1929 or 1930 if my math is halfway accurate. How amazing to have lived that long!

She's a great story teller, by the way, which has always been something I've enjoyed a lot.

OK... back to Painter again. ;)

okay, back to painter :-)

I finished something using about 90% painter. Since painter's airbrushes sort of lack smoothness (to me at any rate) I switched over to PaintShop Pro, but this pic's background and the basic outline and bottom layered colors are Painter IX.
(I have to download that patch over the weekend)
AND.... I used "Rob's Brushes" from this here very forum :-)
Thank you Rob. They really made things easy for sketching!

I don't draw birds like this very well....mostly raptors are my forte but this was a quickie because I wanted to test out some photo paper I found at the dollar store..lol..and I did it in a hurry.
I think once I slow down and take my time, I'll rock! lol
