Im looking into several packages. But my guestion for all you experienced users of XSI is what is the feedback like on a fully rigged sub d character and if not are there ways like in Maya with deleting nodes, useling layers and such to help with the speed.

I heard XSI 3 was supposed to speed this up guite a bit.

SubDs in XSI are very fast. What you heard about version 3 is correct. It is even faster.

If you hide the subdivided mesh, the bones will update as if there was no envelope. In otherwords, real time.

from what I've seen personally you can get interaction with more than 2 million triangles, its not exactly fast at that res, but it says a little about the speed of the new subd.. you can easily have a gamecharacter subdivided walk realtime, and you can pull points on a mesh not far from real time at subD level 4, and completely realtime at level 2.

XSI3 subd just might be the fastest in the world :D

Much faster than anything else I'm working with, and the display is lovely too.

On the topic of performance...........

I've been using the isner spine on some of my characters in XSI 2.03, and it has trouble with realtime playback

Naturally this isn't an issue in ver. 3 right?

Anyone had this prob in 2.03? Or yaz all got blissering fast computers :p

Mine's only a dual 800 xeon, 512 ram and a wildcat 4110.
But still........

Gotta upgrade soon..............REAL soon!

Oh im a student using XSI at uni.

There's a few XSI people in Oz though. They just had a user group meeting just the other week.

There's only really one distributor of XSI in australia, that and some reasons that go along with that (that I shouldn't go into) kinda hurt XSI's popularity in Australia.

I guess so, it just seems a little light on the ground for xsi users in oz.

Where abouts are you and what do you do?

Thanks for the info guys. It helps alot. I have another one. Is it possible to transfer one skeleton from one mesh to another and modify the skeleton to fit the new mesh and have all the controls and constraints stay in place. All would you have to do over is the weight map?

Sorry for the late reply frumpy bunyin

Yeah I'm just a student, doing a Batchelor of Animation at uni in Brisbane.

All the boys up here are Maya users naturally. Though a few of the companies use XSI here and there.

Give it some time though ;)

I only know of Photon using xsi there. Though they are mostly maya.

So why did you choose xsi?

Ejecta;
You can re-use rigs and modify proportions with little woe. You may find it easier to mute some constraits while working to adjsut it. Be sure to set a new default position, and store a static pose for safety.

Oh oks, didn't know for sure if Photon used it or not. I know a guy who worked there on scooby doo, but he's a Maya guy. Though I did read that XSI was used in Scooby.

Also guy who graduated from our course a year or two ago got a job at Animal Logic as they were interested in someone who could use XSI.
He only used if for a few weeks at the most, and got the job from that. Though he did have industry experience working at a games studio :)

"So why did you choose xsi?"

I'd used max in the past, and was using maya. A friend of mine was always going on about softimage and XSI, when XSI2 came out I got a chance to use it and realized how awesome it was, especially for character animation.
As my uni course is totally centered around character animation, and that's the area I want to get into...it was the clear choice for me personally:)
I've always been worried about using the same package that everyone else is....But for me now it's the package that'll allows me to make the best possible work. With the least frustration ;)

So frumpy bunyin, where are u and what do ya do? ;)

I don't know if photon used xsi for scooby, everyone I know who was on it was usinf Maya. I think giant killer robots used it for som of the ghosts.

Who's the guy you know at Animals, or at least the guy from your course who is/was there?

I'm in Sydney, and do 3d stuff.
