View Full Version : Grass shader for max4. How?
toddy333 10-26-2002, 02:23 AM I am trying to make as realistic as possible grass texture without the polys, can some one help?

Why not just use some good, hi-res photos of grass?
Or perhaps try using a hair engine to create it ;)
I would recommend modelling it though, even if you only do it with an extremely low polygon count, it will look better than just using a texture.

How about making a few blades of high poly grass, and rendering them swaying slightly into a movie file (and one for alpha).
Then using that to texture just a plane.
Then using surface point scatter (or.. something. I can't remember what it's called) to scatter the plane over where ever you want the grass?
I don't know if that'll work, I'm just guessing :).

textures or 'scatter' as has been said.
a tute for using 'scatter':

I am trying to get a grass material that will be used for grass from a long distance away that looks realistic. I could use grass-o-matic but too too much polygons. I think it needs a great bump map to make grass look like it stands up but I can't get it to look right. I am just asking this question to get some opinions, gain some experience and save a little time. From a long ago post from a different site that I can't remember I found a picture and an almost complete material for grass (I think it is missing a specular shader and a correct bump map). Check out what the shader can do in the picture. I can send you the incomplete shader if you like. I would complete it but I am new to the business. I have the post on a text file if you need more info. I think it may have a falloff on it as well (view). Maybe I am asking in the wronge post area?

To me that just looks like a bump or displacement map
