i havnt ever tried this but from what ive read the standard render cant do this but mental ray render will. correct me if im wrong

yep..mental ray can do it...
but i think mayas render can aswell, theres a plug on highend (dont know what its called though) that alows blurred/falloff reflections using mayas renderer.....but i think its dog slow :(

I'll find this...
I see some techs that use the sampler info utility for the simulate falloff in materials, as bump and color. Maybe us can use the sampler info in the reflection... But I dont know..

Look at the tutorial to simulate radiosity on http://www.nrender.com
As a conclusion, the author says he will use the same technic to simulate soft-reflections.
