View Full Version : amd 4400 + maya mental ray = problem?
Poopz 07-12-2005, 11:38 PM Hello all. Here are the specs on my new machine:
AMD 4400+ Athlon X2
Asus SLI Deluxe
2GB OCZ preformance RAM
2x WD 10,000 RPM Raptor drives in RAID
nVidia 6200TC (64Mb onboard and 256 total shared from system)
^temporary card until i can get a 7800 GTX or something...
I'm using Maya 6.5 and i have used this version of Maya on my old machine and it works just fine. The first thing i noticed was it was really choppy when working in maya but i figured that was just the graphics card. Then i tryed the ZooRender benchmark (using mental ray). It seemed to be working a very long time on it and then it finally finished rendering only to come out as the prerender blue color. I know its finished though because the status text that says rendering in yellow turns grey indicating that it is finished. I also tried a batch render to see if it would render without showing a preview but it comes up with an error on the command line saying: "cannot find availible port". My guess is that Maya thinks i have the Satalite render for maya installed and my firewall is blocking the port that its trying to communicate with it on. yet i DONT have the satalite renderer installed. If anyone can help me get mental ray working please help.

I believe the problem is your video card. Its not really made for workstation software like Maya. Some people have been able get Maya to work on their high end gaming cards but the 6200 probably isn't one of them. But it might get better when you get your 7800 GTX.
As far as rendering problem goes its not your videocard. The choppyness you are experiencing in Maya might be the video card.

Im sure it will work infinately better with a 7800GTX. I maybe mistaken but i thought that mental ray was totally software rendered and therfore basically all cpu. It seems to me if the problem were the graphics card only then i should beable to atleast do a batch render.

I'd guarantee it's not the video card. I've used Maya on a 440MX 32Mb or somesuch in my laptop just fine (well, you know, not fine, but it worked).
Definately. Your video card has nothing to do with your rendering performance in this case. Insted I would investigate your firewall options. Perhaps there are some internal communications occuring over the loopback address and TCP/IP. Many software packages out there communicate within your computer this way, and I wouldnt be surprised if Maya did. However, I'm not a Maya expert so I cant really say what exactly is happening. Perhaps someone with better knowledge about maya may shed some light on it.
In the meantime, ensure you have the latest drivers for everything.
You can expect about the same performance from a 6200 as you would a 5200FX, a bit higher of cource, but they fit the same corner of the market (low end).

I remember reading somewhere that Maya 6.5 has trouble taking advantage of dual core cpu's. So you could very well only be utilising 1 core, causing your slowdown.

May 6.5 has has absolutely NO issues using Dual core processors.
If you need to see for yourself, just google it. Maya 6.5 flat out rocks with Dual core.

Thank you Lots and others. I was guessing something like a loop back set up myself i think i may just turn off my firewall for just a bit to test it out. My guess is that it has to do with the mental ray licensing and its checking the FlexLM server or something like that. Thanks again ill report back with results soon.

Well unfortunately i just tried it with my firewall off and it still does not work. Im now wondering if my dual LAN maybe interfering with the defalt settings for maya, since im using the second LAN as my network connection. Please, if anyone has any info regaurding this topic post it.

Try disabling the network card that Maya isn't locked to?

Well thank you everyone for helping. I switched LAN ports so that i was using LAN port #1 eventually got that all working. I found that i was unable to access anything on my local network on LAN port #1 though. I tried disabling the firewall and everything to make sure that it wasnt that and it still didnt work. So finally after a long time of playing around with settings i uninstalled the Nvidia firewall that came package with my MoBo. After i did that i was able to access things on the network. Then i found that I was able to batch render again! There is a loop back of some kind within Maya be it a lisence im not sure but im really happy with it. my rendering times are amazing with the 4400+ too.
software rendering time (single thread)
on my cave scene
AMD 2000+ 4:35
AMD 4400+ 1:53
Im really really amazed since that isnt even taking advantage of the other core... i cant wait to use it more. everyone have a nice day.

FYI, 64 bit Mental Ray was written for AMD.
