View Full Version : How do I merge points in Modo?

I have a question about merging points. I am a Lightwave user and learning Modo. While I am struggling to some extent in learning Modo, I know that once I learn how to use Modo that I will be able to model things faster. Therefore, I think its worth the time and effort for me to learn Modo. As I am coming from Lightwave, I'm really into spline-modeling and spline-patching. In or to do do this, I have drawn out the splines. Then I go on to merge the points. (As in online video tutorial.) Now in vertex mode, I choose 'Geometry' on the main menu, then on the dropdown menu, I click 'Vertex', finally on the pop-up menu on the side I choose 'Merge'. Nothing happens. No points are merged. I've also tried to merge the points using the 'Merge Tool'. Still, no points merged. There is definately something I'm doing wrong. Does this need to be done with the points selected or not selected? Could somebody who has merged points give me some advice?

The merge points tool works by dragging in the viewport to interactively set your range - it's pretty cool but won't give you the reassuring "x points merged" pop-up.

I have this command mapped to a pie menu slot

vert.merge "fixed" dist:[0 m]

this will merge all points directly on top of each other (and tell you how many were merged)

if you want a LW style pop-up it's in the drop down menus under geometry->vertex->merge

There are a few ways to "merge" points. One way is as you have been told by leuey. Like he said, when you click the MERGE icon you then need to either drag interactively in the view (which sets the distance for the merging) or enter a numeric number in the tool area. All points within this range will be merged.

Another way is to JOIN selected vertices. You select the verts you want to join, go to the Vertex menu and then select JOIN or JOIN AVERAGED. JOIN will join all selected vertices to the last selected vertice unless you select "averaged", in which case it will act just like JOIN AVERAGED, which joins all selected vertices in the "middle" of them all (i.e. averaged).

Thank you both very much guys! I will try both methods out tonight and let you know how I did! Thanks again! I'm working on my 1st spaceship in Modo using splines. I like the program now, and I'm sure as I learn more about this program, I'll like it even better.
