Hey guys,

A friend and I have been working on a game for a little while now, but we ran into some trouble regarding what would be the best way to create tiles for our backgrounds (the game is in an overhead perspective).

How does one create a set of tiles to get a similar effect to this:

Even something simpler like the tiles employed in Warcraft 2 would suit our needs well:

Anyone have any pointers or a good starting point?

Mark Peasley covers some tips here...

Although I think his end result shows too much "butterfly" mirroring artifacts along the tile edges. It isn't hard to make those less obvious, just a bit more careful painting.

another good example is Command and Conquer red Alert Map editor. Not the most elegant of level editors but it shows you each individual section of map, and how it pieces together. Small gifs with opacity maps i think.
