View Full Version : Village by the ocean: WIP
spirogyro 07-11-2005, 04:31 AM Hello everyone, some of you may have seen the beginnings of this in a challenge that me and Kuzgunoglu had started. Unfortunatly it seems that he will be unable to continue his work and I've decided to complete what I have started. So from now on my WIP will continue in this thread. I am very interested in critiques so please DON'T HESITATE.
This is where I left off. I started with the peir and I will work myself back onto the land. This render has a temporary image in the back. I'm not very happy with the lights that I've made. They seem not too fit very well. I would love some suggestions on those. Thanks!

Don't worry about the anti-alaising, it was just a test render...

Does anyone have any ideas on how I can change the lightposts to make them more appealing? Please help, I've researched this and I can't come up with anything.

Hi spirogyro, i like the imagery of your scene and if you can get your background to match the stand in photom your scen would realyl look incredible. As for the lightposts i think they look oo clean and bland compared to everything else, sorry for the broad generalized answer but textruing and lighting is not really one of my strong suits. But maybe just try and grundge them up a little bit more?
Good luck

hmmm.... well from my youth living along the coastal areas of FL, the piers around there normally had flourescent lights (48 inch'ish) that hung from rusty small link chains attached to posts made from 4x4 boards. I've also seen incandescent lights hanging from posts made from 4x4s too. The 'shades' put on to the incandescent lights reminded me of 'rice picker' hats.
I think the biggest thing about the lights you're using right now is that they aren't weathered like the rest of the dock. So, they kind of stick out like a sore thumb. At any rate, with a dock that looks that weathered, I'd shoot for lighting and posts that look 'home made' to some degree. The posts don't need to be made from wood, as i've seen some fabricated from plumbing pipes too.
best of luck

looking good so far, i like the wood texture, and the composition, may be try a shot from the water, i mean from down so you can see all the pier's fundations and the lamps, with the sky in the background and may be some birds, hehe, just a suggestion, but yeah, so good so far, nice bump. The lighting.. try some area lights.
cheers

Thanks everyone for your ideas. I really like the "homemade" look like Nunyas was talking about. I think that's what I need to do. For everyone else, the image in the background is just a temp plate. It's not final at all. I will actually be modelling buildings and a shore. I will probably make the water too. Most likely using the ocean shader used in Maya, unless someone can point me over to a tutorial that has a good outcome.
