View Full Version : Arm bones mirror
snot_nose 10-25-2002, 01:14 AM My max falls down every time i'm saving the scene, and when i'm trying to load the file again it doesn't let me. i'm almost sure the problem is related to my mirrored bones of the arm and hand.
is there a special way to mirror bones for the arms, or should i start the other arm and hand all over again (wich means i'll have to wire all the custom attributes again).
i think i tried every possible way to mirror the arms. including - deleting the end effector (the ik chain) and choosing the mirror bones option in the mirror dialog, and then applying to it a new ik chain.
do u know a better solution or should i make the new hand from the begining?

What I do is clone them, unlink all the bones in the clone and then mirror and relink. I do it before wiring and IK. I think there's no escaping rewiring and all of that. Maybe there's a better way.

Which version of max are you using? In max 5, I've been able to mirror copy with the ik chain still on the bones -- an arm in my case. I disconnected the hand and then re-parented a copy on the other side -- and I think that I did have to re-wire my custom attributes on the fingers, though I don't know if I could have gotten away with trying to copy the custom attributes or not. I kind of doubt it.
It may work in Max 4 too, but if you're using Max 5, make sure that the top most bone (shoulder bone or upper arm bone, which ever starts your arm) is the child of something (mine was parented to a dummy). And make sure you include that dummy in your mirror. It's worked for me. I think there's a couple of pages on it in the max 5 tutorial manual.

Actually,
when I mirrored the arm (in Max 4) my custom attributes DID work but in the opposite values, so i had to add a "-" (minus) in their wire parameter dialog.
My problem was that my max is falling down now, and i think it's since the mirrored arm.
I think i'll just start the arm all over again, and it will save me a lot of problems.
