Hey guys, this is between me and my brother. I'm not going to say what side each of us is on but we always disagree on this matter.

Please tell me which is the better model and why.

Mug 1
Basis: The model gets triangulated before being rendered, so why have the extra verts and edges there to get in the way.

Mug 2
Basis: It's better to have the extra edge loops because the model will triangulate smoother and a more accurate display of a true polycount

Mug 2 smooths out ever so slightly better. So its better but not by enough to matter, unless you need an all quad solution for MRforMaya or Zbrush or something like that.

Either way you have a ton of radial divisions on that mug, so poly count isn't really a problem.

Does it have to be smoothed or not? 2 anyway

I think that it could still use a few more loops for better influence upon smoothing, as well the place where the handles meet the main body could be supported with a bump/extra loop or two to manip some imperfection, depending I suppose upon the intended radius and look of joinery . JMO :)

2 - The loops clinch it for me, that way you'd get better results after smoothing.
