my first thread post here. Well i'm not the kind of modeller who makes realistic renders of pics, but rather mod- and hobby-game Models. But beacuse i like cars, i wanted to make some technical animation, and so i did a working 12-Cylinder 90° V engine ( i know 90deg V12 doesnt exist, but its 3x so hard to animate a 60,65 or 72 deg V12). The anim lenght is 8 seconds, 2 crankshaft rotations and one camshaft rotation, and so you can let the anim loop all time.
I didnt want to increase the polycount too high to keep the rendering times low and the functionality in the foreground. So dont tell me about colors, materials and polycounts. Thanks :-)
I used Lightwave 7.0b.
Comments and Crits are welcome (dont tell me that the Valve Springs are missing or that i used a gear transmission for the Camshafts)

Looks pretty cool.
Maybe you could have another animation that follows and plays a faster frame rate to give more of a sense of what everything is doing at a high rate of speed.
It’s very exact as I examine it (being a bit of a motor head myself, I’ve rebuilt several motorcycle engines). It must have been a bit of a pain to calculate dual overhead camshafts on a 4-valve v12 engine.
My only crit is your piston crowns........ the tops of most pistons are domed.... not concaved. And they have little recesses in the tops of them where the valves sit. In your case there should be four little indentations in the top of each piston
Otherwise I think it’s neat…… never seen a 90 degree v12 before

Mine are flat and do not have divots for the valves but I can understand why they would if the pistons were domed. Otherwise the valves would very likely crash into the crowns.... This is either a modern engine development or purely a matter of choice in engineering. I only know about older mercedes engines so i cannot swear to anything other than mine are indeed flat. I suppose having is concave would allow a higher volume of gas and air to be released intot he cylinder but would have less compression than a domed crown. I guess it depends one wether this engine is for racing or for a tank ;-)
Since it is an imaginary engine I guess it doesn't matter but I have never seen an auto engine that used large gears instead of timing chains for the valve timing but that is another story.

that is quite good to use for and educational item.
Nice work on all of the timings of all of those rotating elements.

Wasted Weasel: i know that many engines have those domes on the pistontop, but the reason why i didnt include is is polycount. This whole thing has like 40000 triangles (20000 polys), so if i would add 4 24-sided cylinder carvings per cylinder, what is a total of 48 Domes, it would eat many thousands of polys more. On my AMD-1400 the framerate INSIDE Lightwave would drop too much, and thats not good for animating/calculating it.

ahhh..... say no more. now i totally understand (I have an AMD 1400 as well).
that would make the poly count rather insane compared to the rest of the engine parts.
