View Full Version : Cartoony Walk Cycle
10-24-2002, 11:31 PM
Here's a cartoony walkcycle.
In order to make it more clear, I've rendered perspective, front, and side views.
About 250 kb per animation. Divx 5.02
> Perspective view (http://usuarios.tripod.es/andytoons/img/anim/WalkPersp_DivX.avi)
> Front View... (http://usuarios.lycos.es/andytoons/img/anim/WalkFront_DivX.avi)
> Side View... (http://usuarios.lycos.es/andytoons/img/anim/WalkSide_DivX.avi)
I hope you like it (and tell me what you think...)

First off, Nice Walk Man. I like the exagerated arm movement. The only major thing I see are the legs. There a some snaps, and they don't extend enough before planting. You could also have them extend more when they push off. Besides that, it's a really nice walk!:buttrock:

Yeah.. nice stuff..
I agree with Chong... you might want to do something with the feet.. I love the hands and arms though..
For the feet I would make like a semi circle kind of movement.. out and back in.. (with the knees pointing out while the foot is moving forward)
I hope that makes sense

Nice walk. It has personality. I agree about the legs. There is a pop, it seems, when they are at the extremes. Also, it looks like he could extend them further during the step.
I also feel his waist is not forward enough. Remember, a walk is really a fall, just the feet are keeping you from falling. I can really see it in the side view. I don't get a since of self locomotion from it. Know what i mean?
On the front view, his right hand appears to go through his leg, but that's easy to fix.
Aside from those things, I think it's a great walk. It's fluid (except the popping) and the arms look cool. Lots of overlap.

Here I am...
Alright, I was pretty tired of this one, but your comments have convinced me, so I think I'll do some more tweaks on him.
I'll post the new version before the weekend.
Thanks a lot for your comments.
Rogue, I've checked the hands and there's no intersection with the legs, even though it looks like there was, so I guess I'll leave that part.
goosh, I'm not sure I understand "For the feet I would make like a semi circle kind of movement", you mean you'd have the feet "pointing out"? cause they do already I think...

One more tiny little thing, the hips arent going up and down. You have them twisting appropriately, but you need a little dip, left/right/left/right to go opposite of the shoulder dips. Its a tiny thing to change, but you hips right now are staying at one level and it looks funny, the front view will show you the best what I mean.

What do you mean, dmcgrath?
I've animated the hips up and down, left and right and there's also a twist, rotation just doing the opposite thing that the shoulders do in the front and side views (kind of hard to explain). Maybe I should exaggerate this rotation a bit more...
Thanks for the comment.

The only other thing I would add to this is to maybe rotate the feet out away from the body a little more. This is such a relaxed kind of walk. I think that little tweak would make that sell a little more.

sorry if I didnt make myself clear. I really mean the tilt on the hips. Your rotation and the actual up and down movement is GREAT. If the tilt is there (left hip up/right hip down, and then the reverse) that is what I meant. Also, if you exaggerate it a lot more, then you have a more feminine walk. But for your walk cycle I meant just a little tilt. :)

Here's the update.

I think I've fixed the leg snap.
I tweaked some curves to get more fluency and I did some changes on the feet. I rotated them out of the body a bit more.
Not a big deal.
After watching my animations again and again, I always end up hating them, no matter how good or bad they are. I guess you guys have the same problem.
dmcgrath: The tilt of the hips does the same thing as the feet: when the left foot is up, the "left part of the hips" is up too. I could've done just the opossite, and it would work, but I would get a feminine walk. So I didn't touch the hips. Thanks anyway.
btw, the old ones are here (http://usuarios.lycos.es/andytoons/img/anim/WalkPersp_DivXo.avi) (persp), here (http://usuarios.lycos.es/andytoons/img/anim/WalkSide_DivXo.avi) (side) and here (http://usuarios.lycos.es/andytoons/img/anim/WalkFront_DivXo.avi) (front).

The side view looks the same. Are you sure the files are different? I clicked on the link and it took me to your website and I clicked on the top animation. I still see that popping in the legs when he's at the extremes of his steps. I still get a sense of him being unbalanced. I think his waist needs to be further forward.
