View Full Version : have an LW to maya conversion question
Gentle Fury 10-24-2002, 11:26 PM I have a client that needs us to finish a project that was started in Lightwave. We use maya here, is there a way to convert an entire scene (lights, textures, geometry, animation curves) into a maya compatible scene (mb, ma)?
This is an urgent question as we have a sharp deadline.
Any help would be really appreciated!

There are no conversion programs out there that work perfectly--not even close. Most of these programs only convert a few things over.

At best you can import the models but it woul dhelp if you had lightwave to sort out the models or export them as OBJ from LW.

I am not sure about the compatibility with LW, but see what the Kaydara Filmbox plugins can do for you...

Try Deep Exploration (www.righthemisphere.com). Converts between most 3D formats, plus you can download a full-working demo. A great app, although I´m not sure if it´s even possible to convert deformations among 3D packages. Might require some re-rigging and such.

Gentle Fury, I have the beaver project and it should import Light, Camera`s and Objects into Maya 4 and 4.5. I don`t think the textures would come thru the import process and I`m not sure about any deformations. But the basic objects and the scene contents should work. I could try a scene for you if you like?
edit : the object and or light animation should get baked into the Maya scene. It should do key-per-frame. which is no worries in Maya cos u can reduce keys.
Cheers,
M
