Title: Killthechicken
Name: Laurent Pierlot
Country: USA
Software: ZBrush

Sooo..Here's for more descriptions :)
This is based on an old drawing I made from when I was still drawing, It's like a sacifice scene with some crazy characters.I posted a wip and concept earlier on the wip forum.I will do an other 3D BG more close to the original concept if I have time later.
I had a lot of fun with ZBrush on that one and a lot of photoshop tweaks.everything I'm doing here at blur is mostly animated and moving so when it comes to a still ,I think 2D and 3D are realy mixed.and I think a good 3D artist it's not about how much you can get out of your 3D software but how to make the best you can for the final pic.
just to explain why I use a lots of photoshop on my stills :)
anyway ,hope U like it.
any comment are more than welcome

this is superb, so powerful, i can actually feel the crazyness, i can feel the horror and tension in the air.

the characters are amazing, awesome design! so much character! the left one is more of my liking, has more character in my taste.
great lightning also, the atmosphere is awesome! and also there is a chiken in the scene- so it always adds somethin ;).

by the way, today i went to a film festival in Jerusalem, and saw Blur's new short film Gopher, i didnt even know the movie was going to be there- you guys did an incredible job on it, i admire your studio so much!

fantastic image! I'm really impressed by what can be done with ZBrush. I think the characters are brilliant, the faces are very original. The composition is a bit distracting, as the two guys arms are in a direct line with each other and seem to merge, but apart from that it's a very good job. 4 stars

Fantastic lightning and monochromatic colors, but most fantastic are characters.

This is one of the best I have seen here on cgtalk. I didn't know ZBRUSH was that powerful to render something like this.

With all the five stars I'm a tad confused on how it's at three but wonderful creepy work. These guys need a KFC on the corner so they dont have to do all the work themselves.

Nice design, and great modeling.
But I think the lighting could be less bright on the background, in order to make it contrast with the characters, and to put the focus point on them. Right now everything is on the same lighting level.

07-10-2005, 09:18 AM
Wonderful image! I love this kind of style.

Just curious, is the chicken feathers photoshopped? Or I suppose what I really want to know is can you make "feathers" in Z-brush?

I think that the character's clothing are maybe a little too monochromatic, I would like to see just a little change of hue. The reason I'm thinking, is that the clothing is red for blood and desatured, not distracting. Is there some other reaon.

Other than that, brilliant image! 5 stars. (Voted before I read the thread :) )

07-10-2005, 09:49 AM
AMAZING!!! The pose on the thin/taller guy could be a little stronger as he feels a little "stiff", but overall an amazing piece of art!! Wonderfull to see something different from naked chicks/sci-fi/cars stuff for once! :)

First of all it's just a veeeery nice picture, with an awesome mood and incredibly cool atmosphere! This work is móre than worth frontpage! ;)

And second of all, it's awesome to read this is all just ZBrush and Photoshop...! I really admire people who can do súch áwesome stuff with just that two packages! :scream:

And about that your saying that Photoshop is just the best way to finish it all, I feel very good. I often render állót different light-setups and different materials and so, to all combine them in Photoshop... Photoshop is just so cool to be able to (almost ;) ) exactly match what you was planning to make! :buttrock:

Maybe if you'll ever have time, it may be interesting to see which stuff you rendered seperately... :applause:

From me in every case 5* :)

Good luck in the future (and at Blur!), I'll be watching when your new work comes online! :applause:

That's the best forhead I've ever seen on a character bar none (on the left). Great piece, agreed the arms do confuse a littel in the middle but it doesn't detract from a top class image! 5 stars from me :)

It seemed like the ways all of the wrinkles were done both on the skin of the characters and in the clothes are very similar. You may have already explained this in something I missed because I am not as familiar with photoshop as I should be, but if there was one universal method used to make these wrinkles, what was that method?

If anyone else on this thread knows how they were done, please let me know.

07-10-2005, 03:51 PM
Real good technique, the involvement of science fiction in a photo-real enviroment.

Can you post the drawing that you say you did before 3D?

apeman
07-10-2005, 04:29 PM
Awesoem pic! I believe there is nothing wrong with tweaking 3d stills; ultimately its the end product that matters not what your software can do.

Your work is consistently good (and creepy :)), you have a great knack for textures and lighting. Your atmosphere in your pictures comes across excellently

hey, that's a great one.
i totally agree with what you say about stills in 3D, and the photoshop job on top of it.

For my two latest works, i've been using B&W ambiant occ renders, and i've colorized and textured the whole thing afterwhile. A bit extreme, but pretty fast n fun anyway.

Let's talk about yours.
characters and mood, execution, it Rocks. Keep groovin'

Good stuff Laurent! Like everyone's been saying, the characters are great and the mood is nice and wicked. You mentioned doing a new background and I think that would really make this piece just perfect for me. Is the skinny guy's head shaped like that because he's had a top hat on too long? hehe, thanks for the great piece, made my day.

wow, I've had zbrush2 for a little over a year now I think, and i am psyched that with enough practice and time, I will be able to create images like this (fingers crossed), what an awsome picture, the lighting ties together on the knife blade reflection flare, what creepy characters. I love that the charicters have a caricature about them, but the texturing and sense of depth is so realistic. Super job!

Those characters are wonderful and the creepy mood you have captured fits perfectly. I get a nightmare before christmas feeling, which is a good thing, since i love that movie. I think your characters look unique. Is there any chance of seeing more of those? (you get my first 5)

Beautiful work. I like the tall guy's hat especially. I have problems modeling hats. I dont know why.

Blur are the kings of the hill in my book.

I'll never understand why some CG artists are so biased against doing postwork. They say no post like it was a badge of honor. I think I may have produced one render in years that I didn't do post on. There's always a way to make it better, even if it's just color balance.

Great pic, love the atmosphere, the expressions on the faces(the chick as well;)). I would only suggest making the chicken a bit more scared, it seems that it doesn't move at all, and they usually try to escape these situations. Who wouldn't:twisted: ? Anyway, great job!!

:banghead: Zut alors - man! This image is were it's at!

Are you self taught in ZBrush? Or did you just the eat the manual one page at a time?:)

That app is such a quirky interface, I have tried to follow 'the alway brilliant Alex Alvarez' on his Gnomon ZBrush DVD. But it's 8 hours and I always freak out about an hour into it, and I have to start all over again. And no harm meant to Meats, but his DVD hurts my brain! I have heard rumours they recorded his DVD on a soundstage on the new planet Xena! (Only 1/2 kidding Meats, your Gnomon DVD is great, but your skills with it are scary. It's like teaching someone to play electric guitar, fine that's easy - but now write Purple Haze and play it left hand, then do an encore by playing Black Napkins. That's my take on Alex & Meats folks, (bow) thank you, thank you.)

Was there a specific demo/dvd/book/tutorial that you leaped from?

If I created these images and was able to to rig them, I'd quit my stupid job and be fast on my way to a Feature Film - indie style!!

Please Advise!
