View Full Version : moving non circular eyes
danydrunk 07-08-2005, 11:49 PM I wish to know how to rig cartoony eyes, (non spherical) eyes. Like disney characters that are oval. How would I rotate an eye like that?? It would surely get out of its pivot.
You know what i mean? with a spherical eye it doesnt matter where you move the eye it always rotate around it self, but with an oval you get the problem where the eye get out of the eyespace.
thank you

Couple of ways you can do this, you can create a spherical eye and then apply a lattice deformation to give it an oval shape, or you can create an oval eye and make the pupil using a texture projection, which you then rotate rather than the eye to move the pupil.

by using a lattice oval what is the result? wouldnt it be the same as using say, a polygon oval?

Not really. If you made a polygon oval and try to rotate it, the oblong shape will pop out of the characters' head. Using the lattice allows the shape to spin inside of it. Wow, it is hard to explain. I'd say just try it and you'll see immediately.

just make sure the lattice isn't parented underneaththe eye itself, so that rotations of the eye don't rotate the lattice as well, and bob's your monkey...

Check this : http://www.geocities.com/zukezuko/EyeRig.zip
you need xsi 4.2 for this file
Surface contrain pupil to nurb sphere and link the U & V position with the X & Y
position of the null. But the expression needs a bit costumization.
If you need more details on how todo please ask.
