View Full Version : Organizing Files/Resources
Daoine 07-08-2005, 08:23 PM Hey everybody. Unfortunately, my organizational skills are as good as my 3d skills. Poor (for the time being:D). How do you all organize your files and resources. Do you use shortcuts a lot or just keep everything in one place. My PC is a dedicated 3d machine which I play games on from time to time. C4D, poser, Maya PLE, Motionbuilder PLE, Bryce, Mojoworlds, image files, it's all getting so confusing.
Thanks for any opinions,
Daoine

Hi,
Are you saying that you have ALL your files(models, images, textures, etc.) from all your
softwares, loose in your 'My Documents' folder? If so, that would be confusing! At least create a seperate folder for each app and possibly sub-folders for models, images, etc.
Hope this is of some help..........have fun! :)

My wife keeps everything on her desktop...a laptop no less! It drives me crazy and I can barely use her computer. I've tried to break her from it, but she wants "to see everything at the same time."
Myself, I'm still trying to get a hold of it for 3d. I work in prepress, so I'm accustomed to managing inventories of digital assets. My projects are organized, but I'm still trying to figure out how to get a hold of textures/materials. I need a better system to pick from them. Also, I need to revisit catalogs in the manual I think.

Finster,
Yes, I would think catalogs would be your answer. I use them and find them very handy.

"...revisit catalogs in the manual"? I just checked the manual index and there is no "catalog" listed. Where in the manual? Thx.

The Browser
chapter4: Workflow, page 124-126
can't delete it, so it'll stay...

Hey everybody. I'll have to check up on catalogues when I get a chance, I just arrived in florida on vacation today, so I haven't had much chance to do anything c4d. I don't keep everything in one folder, each app has it's own folder. I just hate going through a whole bunch of sub folders to get to anything so I end up putting my "current" stuff on my desktop until it's not so current anymore then move it aside to a "misc" folder when I want to clean stuff up. Then it takes me forever to find it again. I try to organize, but I'm never quite certain where to actually put the stuff. One thing I have done, which seems to work pretty well is to make a folder for each project with each step having it's own folder: modeling, texturing, animation, wip images, etc. The unfortunate part is that not every resource falls into a particular project, so it all gets scrambled.
Just looking to see how you all organize resources outside of particular projects.
Thanks,
Daoine

Daoine, You must work on a lot of projects at the same time to lose track of where your
files are. In C4D, do you use the 'Recent Files' list for opening current projects?
