Let me know what you think.. I'm still kinda struggling with the cast aluminium shader, but for now I think I'll move on to other projects ;)

How could I improve this for one last render?

wow.. VERY cool! :)

awesome render there

/me wishes Brazil worked on Maya... ah well.. what can ya do :)

thanks ;) Well, splutterfish IS working on a Maya version of Brazil...

it looks great...but why are the tires not rubber colored. I think that would make it look much better.

Hmm.. black... that might actually work!
j/k, I went for a prototype kinda look on these ones.. plus I like funky colors :)
To be honest, I haven't tried black on these wheels.. I'll give it a shot this weekend (suxorz.. I can only render on weekends... my own pc is too slow...)

Very nice render. The anisotropic shader if the rims is not stong enough. The surface doesn't look brushed, and therefore, not like aluminum.

I like very much the colors, and the last composition is very good. Maybe placing the focus of the camera in one of the rims logos would help the composition.

How long did the render take? With which processor, RAM, etc?

Actually, I used a carpaint-a-like shader for the rims, mixing a dark grey with white.. so no anisotropy.. I wanted a cast aluminium look, not brushed, so I don't think an anisotropic material is needed actually.. The last could have some bettter focus I agree.. but focussing on either logo will render the other tire entirely blurred, but I think I'll go tinker some more with the focus settings anyway ;)

Rendertimes? err... well, too long I think.. every image took at least a couple of hours on a P4 1.4, 368 Mb ram.. the focussed one took nearly double that.. I used only 1 lightbounce because 2 would take far too long..
It's not that my settings are bad (I used undersampling, and adaptive aa), I think it's because my polygoncount went through the roof... I used rhino to model and convert to meshes... optimizing it in Max didn't give any good results (faults in surface smoothing) so I rendered it as it was...

- I think brushed alu would look better.
- Well, my brazil also has long rendertimes. Think I'm going to give V-ray a try....

I'll work on some nice cast aluminium anyways... it's about time I learn more about shading anyways.. today I wanted to try the method explained in http://www.secondreality.ch , but I couldn't find the advanced raytracing controls anywhere (the blurring of the reflections...). Oh well, perhaps it's a finalrender and not a max setting...

THIS IS FOR MAX R5, DON'T KNOW IF IT WORKS IN MAX R4

quote from the second reality website:
"In the Raytracer Controls rollout I used the Multiresolution Adaptive Antialiaser and upped its Blur/Defocus to 2 (Offset), 4 (Aspect), 0,5 (Defocus) and 1 (DF aspect)."

The only thing u have to do before u can do this is goto 'render' - 'raytracer settings' and enable global ray antialiaser.

The raytracer controls can be found in...
If u are using a non-raytracer type of material in max (used a raytrace map in the reflection slot) u can find raytracer controls in the raytrace map's options. There u can select the 'multiresolution adaptive antialiaser'. Then click the button with the 3 dots next to it to change the blur/defocus parameters.
If blurry reflections look crappy, try upping the initial rays (be carefull this will slow down rendering time dramaticly)

BUT REMEMBER!!! DON'T USE THIS IF U DON'T REALLY NEED IT

Hope u understand it, bad Engl ...
If u have some questions, ask them, maybe I'll make a mini-tutorial on this if uw want...

Have fun!

U mentioned u use Brazil, ...

I use Brzail publ. test verion and it doesnt support max's blurred raytracing... Maybe the final version does I don't know, but I doubt it since brazil uses it's own raytracing techniques... :(

Thanks for your help on this one! I'll try this in the weekend!

Very nice design. :applause:

can anyone help me to get a 3d modelling program but I aint got money for it :surprised

You could get free programs (Wings 3D, gMax, Maya Learning Edition, Blender 3D (don't know if it's yet available)) to start with...

Wings 3D (http://www.wings3d.com/)
Blender 3D (http://www.blender3d.org/)
gMax (http://www.discreet.com/products/gmax/)
Maya Personnal Learning Edition (http://www.aliaswavefront.com/en/Tmpl/Maya/html/index.jhtml?page=/en/Community/Special/maya_ple/index.jhtml&style=normal)

There are also free version of softimage XSI and Lightwave

Softimage website (http://www.softimage.com)
Newtek website (http://www.newtek.com)

And u can order a free demo (30days trial, I think) of 3DStudio MAX at your local dealer. ("hey man give me som stuff", hehehe)
