View Full Version : PCloud - Particles intersect one another
MissAnne 10-24-2002, 01:55 PM I have made a model of a jellybean and a jar and I want to fill the inside of the jar with jellybeans.
I've tried using the PCloud but the jellybeans intersect each other (like 2 jellybeans using up the same space) and I have fiddled around with the settings and can't get it to stop doing that.
Most of the settings in PCloud relate to animation. Am I using the wrong tool to duplicate these jellybeans?
Could you please give me some pointers or even a concise internet site that explains how I can accomplish this w/o cloning the jellybean one by one and placing them inside the jar.
Thanx in advance.
MissAnne
PS. In the future I do wish to animate the jellybeans so any ideas suggested has to work with animation. Thanx again =)

Hi MissAnne, basically you don't want to use pcloud because particles in 3dsmax are node based, so basically their center point is the point that'll collide with another jellybean, so it doesn't detect the edges, therefore they won't sit against eachother but rather clip eachother.
What you wnat is to duplicate a few hundered jelly beans (it sucks I know) but then give them dynamic properties and run a dynamics solution so they all fall into the jar and fill it up. It'll be a long calc process, but that's the way to go about it. If you want to read up on dynamics (if you have max 5 you can use reaktor) read the max docs/manual.
If your scene doesn't have to be photo realistic, I'd find a photo of jelly's pressed up against eachother and wrap that inside a jar, it'll look less than impressive, but it's a far easier solution :)

Thank you for that handy tip. I didn't know that PCloud works like that (centre node) and will definetely keep that in mind when duplicating objects.
Unfortunetely I wish I could just grab a pic of jelly beans. It's my school assignment where I wish to animate a jar full of jelly beans being knocked over so the jelly beans will end up all scattered over the table.
I will take your advice re: using Dynamics to fill up the jar - I didn't think of that and probably never will so thank you for that tip. Still fiddling around with how to get the beans to fall out of the jar nicely and in accordance to the real world (ie. gravity)
Thank you once again Allan. :D

you can speed up the acceleration by using lower rez geometery and smoothing during rendertime. speed shouldn't be too bad.

FYI, instanced geometry works that way by nature, no matter what package you use. Rigid Body simulation is really the only way to test geometry for face collisions. Some particle systems allow you to have a perParticle avoidance parameter but this is force based and cannot guarentee non-intersection.

I'm currently using SimCloth plug in to do the Rigid Body simulation with some spheres and it works fine but I do only have 3 spheres inside a lathed object (vase).
I am very scared what my computer will do trying to render 50+ jelly beans animating.
Yawn. It's 2am here in Aussie land so can't play with 3d anymore. Will try again tomorrow.
Thank you very much to everyone who has posted replys - greatly appreciated from a student who just started 3ds Max 3 months ago
