Howdy experienced max users!

I am having some problems importing files from other CAD programs at high quaility with out the file sizes beoming too large. I am putting together an animation or a product that has been modelled in a parametric CAD program. I am exporting them as STL file's which create a triangluate mesh but because of the detail I require the file size and poly count is massive.

To get the quality surface finish I require I have to export them at high poly counts. The problem being is if I have a detailed curved area I need to crank the poly count up but if that detailed area is on a part that has large flat areas those also get allocated huge amounts of polys that are not required, thus making the file bigger then it needs to be.

I have tried exporting the files from Unigraphics, Solid works, and Pro E but I still do not get a very efficient mesh.

Any people had experience with this or have any alternatives?

Thanks heaps

Chris

Is it possible to separate the curvy areas from the flat areas in the CAD app, so that you can bump up the res of just the curved areas? Then you could attach and weld everything properly in MAX.

Sorry, but that's all I've got :(

Thats a good idea and I could but the amount of detail etc would take sooo long I would be better off modelling.

Has anyone else had experience bringing in other formats other then STL. I have tried IGES using Nurbs but I get crazy faces here and there and they seem to slow max down considerably.

?
