View Full Version : RPF from Max into AE/motion blur
mynewcat 07-07-2005, 07:36 PM OK guys, this is my first post in the After Effects forum, as I'm more of a 3d chap.
Anyway, my question revolves around wanting to stick a motion blur on a file using RPF or RIA files.
The way that I understand it is that I should be able to render something from 3DS Max as an RPF, then bring that into AE 6.5 pro (at work).
Using say, the velocity channel or whateevr I should be able to get a proper motion blur - as opposed to just bluring each frame slightly due to not having and real '3d' data.
i've read some posts about the Reel Effects motion blur plugin, which sounds nice, but it still sounds like a kludge, and not quite taking advantage of the RPF format.
Is that what an RPF can be used for?
cheers in advance.

This can be done in combustion using the rpf motion blur operator, but AE doesn't come with a similar effect as far as I can tell. If there is a third-party solution, I'd be interested to know as well.

No, you're wrong. RSMB can work just the same like combustion*'s motion blur if you have a dedicated input image that contains the motion vector data encoded as RGB values. The only limitation is that it is directly dependent on the bit depth of the image file you use whereas in an RPF file those are float values with theoretically infinite precision. Unfortunately that won't help you, since there is no way to extract motion vectors from an RPF file in AE. You need to store/generate a separate image sequence for that.

Brian - I downloaded the free trial of combustion, but it wouldn't even import a file sequence.
It kept on saying "file corrupted" - whether it was a TIF or RPF so I couldnt tell you what Combustion's problem is.
Mylenium - cheers for the advice. I was gonna aask if you could let us know how to extract motion vectors from a 3d package, such as Max, but looking at the RSMB site, the actual process is not only pretty contrived, it won't work in Max 7.

It's a pity as it goes.
