View Full Version : Burroughs!
alphatron 10-24-2002, 10:40 AM Greetings
First post on the 2D boards. Decided it was as good a time as any to learn to draw.. so here is my attempt at a pencil drawing from a referance photo of William S. Burroughs. Looking for critiques on technique the most.. as I have none ;)

Well the good news is that you can draw. That much is apparent in your image. The bad news is that I think you need to find better materials to work with. I'm guessing you're using a soft lead pencil on a really rough piece of paper. It's so very evident in this piece that it ruins any qualities that the illustration might have.
If you have a sketchbook that you're drawing in, find a flat smooth surfaced one to work with. These will hold your lines much better and not get that smudgy look. Also a hard lead will allow you to put more details into the illustration.
Of course, this is how I work and if you want the smudgy soft look in your illustrations, then ignore the above advice.
Either way ... you're off to a good start. Define your shadows more and see if you can sharpen it up some more to focus the viewer's eye to a point of interest.
