Hey all-

Does anyone know how I could get similar results to this LW tutorial in MAX?

Thanks,

Hey..

u can get these results with Vertex weighting..
check everything out in Editable Poly,
ull see Weight in the vertice sub object level.., under Surface Properties
theres crease for edges too..

Thanks for the reply. When I convert to editable poly and go to vertex sub-mode and adjust the weight... nothing visible happens. Am I missing a step or two?

Hey..

turn to editable poly,
go to Surface Properties,
turn on the NURMS toggle and set iterations to 1,
now go to vertex subobject level,
select some vertices, and change the weight =)

Thanks again.

I'm closer now. I have to select all four vertices at the top, and then the weight adjustment makes it behave similar to the linked imagery. This does really well when pushing away to create the first shape demonstrated... however, it doesn't pull the edges to the corners like the second image displays. In addition, it pulls the faces from the bottom of the object up as well... I guess that could be fixed by adding weight to the bottom, but that seems to complicate the process. Is there a way to create the extreme shape of the second image where the top of the object is pulled into a flat square?

Here's what I'm getting...

Thanks for you help so far.

Vertex Weight and Edge Crease are the two parameters you'll want to play with.

Well, crease helped me get the flat surface, but even when using it together with weight, this is the best I can do... the top isn't getting pulled into a square shape...

I really appreciate the insight so far... any more help would be greatly appreciated. I'm getting really close... but not there yet...h

Like this? Just make sure you grab the side edges as well. Creasing them will get you the flat top, but Weighting them will push them into the corners. Then grab the bottom verts and play with the Weight.

Thanks... i wasn't grabbing the side edges, just the top edges. That's probably it. I'll have to give it a try when I get home from work.

BTW, your object looks a lot smoother. Did you give it more iterations? Or apply another modifier?

Another thing I noticed... your white bounding box shrunk with your object, if you look at my image, the white box stays the same size... any idea why?

I assumed I'd have to weight the bottom as well, but didn't get to it yet.

So... this process seems a bit cumbersome than the lightwave method. Having to select each edge and vertex etc.

Ok, thanks again. I'll post my results when I get home...
