View Full Version : Survey: What do you use to make Hair and why?
Silentstep 07-06-2005, 09:21 PM I just picked up Service Pack 1 for 3ds Max 7, and started using the hair and fur modifier. This made me curious; even with this update, to make realistic hair, what do you use on your models and why?

I use ornatrix because it's quicker and better looking (in my opinion) i do like the styling tools of hair n fur a bit more because they are a little more complete, but ornatrix is way quicker and better looking in rendering. I haven't played much with dynamics for either, so I can't really say for that yet...

HairFX, because it's all I have. Can't afford Ornatrix right now, and I'm still stuck with Max6...

I really don't think it's half as bad as many people have made it sound like. It has its quirks, but you just need to understand how to work around them.

I still use textured planes, to be honest. I get a lot more control out of that that kind of hair, but I'm not really ever animating it as yet. I've played with the new hair in 7.5, but I'll have to really delve into it to get it going well.

hairfx rulez:buttrock: i've tested ornatrix but i couldnt do any good hair at all(at least for now).
the only drawback for hairfx is i cant use it with any other renderer than scanliner, which makes me very sad:(

You should be able to use it for anything if you set it to geometry...which is pretty disastrous, but still.. and as far as I know, they've made it compatible with MR's hair primitives/shaders in the latest version.

hair as geometry is a total disaster!
about the new mray, it doesnt render well with mray, at least in the normal way of doing things (i have no clue what are prmitive shaders of mray). also there's no documentation on it:(
