View Full Version : Edge Slice Question...

Sorry if this sounds dumb.
Silo has a 'split' tool that cuts edges much like the 'Edge slice' tool in Modo. However, in the Silo version the tool allows you to cut inside the polygon, whereas in Modo you are restricted to cutting edges only... Is this the case or am i missing a hidden function?
I only ask because being able to add a vertex whereever you want on a polygon is fantastic for roughing out edge loops and flow...
thanks

Not currently available but it's been put in as a feature request.

If you need to create a new poly via edge slice , just select the newly created face and perform a quick cut and paste this will create a new and separated poly having its own vertexes.

Bye (you can also use other tools)

How does this even remotely do what he asked in being able to knife independantly of edges?

i was a bit baffled by that as well :)

This is my point!

1 - Open Modo and create a ctrl cube. (6 faces in one single geometry)
2 - Now perform a edge slice on a single face of the cube
3 - Double click on a newly created face to verify connection , the whole cube is selected , this means that no new geometry has been added by the edge slice.

Now deselect.

Select one new face and perform a cut and paste , now double click for connections and you''l see that geometryes now are two , and this is handy for subdivision

Polygons are now splitted along the new edge (you can also use the split tool instead of cutting and pasting faces).

Bye

I think what he means is being able to draw like with Slice Edge "inside" a single four-sided polygon and in several directions without cutitng through edges or vertice.

I saw that feature a while ago but really, you still need crossing edges to parametrise a mesh correctly so in the end,it's additional steps instead of saving any.

At least,I wouldn't find it faster myself and I use boxmodeling quite alot.

yes that is exactly what i mean.
SiIo has this as a feature and it gives you a lot of options when you are cutting in edge loops.
i understand tnow the feature is not in current modo but maybe in future version...
it's no big deal... i will just have to do a lot of spinning and disolving of edges instead to acheive similar results...

Could the "drill" tool be used this way?

You're thinking of Solid Drill with stencil.

It does what he's asking for but it's not made for working that way,it would be best suited to "stamp" geometric shapes onto a mesh, say a batman insigna on the torso.

Like I said,I personally wouldn't waste my time cutting in "nothing" since this nothing will have to be manually filled later anyways.

It's not as fast as it's nice to see if you ask me.

It's a bit more than looking more pleasing in Silo, like you say. It is also more intuitive because the user knows there are no geometry limitations. The tool just works with all geometry types and that makes a difference in the thought process and workflow involved with editing geometry. I have the option to draw onto a polygon in Silo and I actually use that option quite heavily because, as has been mentioned already, you can cut new flows very quickly and not have to worry about your Ngons till you are ready to deal with them later on. The freedom to think less about the geometry or tool limits and more about the actual shape is the most important thing. This is why Zbrush rocks, but that's a somewhat different approach than Silo or Modo takes, obviously.

I would definitely be in favor of adding polygon splitting to modo's toolset the way Silo does it - if only just for the sake of having the option there when I want it.

In my opinion it's a no-gain but we all work more or less differently.

If you'd had an edge crossing from one corner vertex to the other(diagonally) the steps would have been exactly the same as in Silo except that you'd have an edge to dissolve, later when taking care of n-gons.

A more dense mesh would be a pain to "fill",in your example, there's only one edge to add in order to parametrize the edges.

Sure I can see some uses but I don't find them faster.

It's all a matter of taste innit? :)

thanks for providing those little illustrations Gwot. I like the method you have for splitting the face there in modo... i agree, having a free-form split tool is a much faster option for me and if i need to rough out some basic flows on my geometry then i will probably always start in Silo... Until maybe/if Modo gets this tool.. I think speed is not something that i have in Modo yet, it's more careful and refined way of working for sure... but i am very slow with it generally... practice makes perfect though...
