I would like to hear some opinions about Modo/XSI combo before jumping on this promo.
Could someone that have used both share some insights here ? What Modo can offer that XSI modeler doesn't ?

Thanks
Felipe

Save that 200 bucks and buy z brush or something...
You will find modeling in xsi just as great and in most cases better and more stable than modo

I usually use software per task. So if i needed Modo for a project(as a timesaver) I would jump on the deal right away. Software is mostly pretty cheap and getting cheaper, so use what you need or like.

PS. My opinion is based on professional profile, if you do 3D for hobby XSI Fnd is quite enough for any task that might arise.

Could someone that have used both share some insights here ? What Modo can offer that XSI modeler doesn't ? It makes a good combo and the transfer is easy with the OBJ format.

Whilst XSI is better at hard body modelling, surfacing and complex models with dozens/hundreds of parts, IMHO Modo is better at quick blocking in and organic modelling in general. If you think the proportional tool in XSI is good, then the various falloff functions would blow you away in Modo.
It feels like the difference is between constructing, and sculpting. Both can be just as important as the other when the project requires it.

As well as being very different, both programs are very good. So good in fact it would be really frustrating that the best features of one program weren't in the other. Thank goodness they work well together

i seem to remember luxology/modo saying they would keep that price range despite what people were saying about Silo, XSI, and Zbrush (cheaper alternatives and some cases better)

oh how the times change.

also i dont get that ad they had, can anyone here maybe explain?

I got Modo and XSI

IF you Own XSI and model in it alot, No need for Modo at all, XSI has got it all really

BUT i got Modo due to the LW like modeling ( been in LW for 6 years ) and the symmetry. Modo symmetry doesn't work in proxy mode so feels alot better. the view option and generial workflow is has some advanages too But not many

If you own LW, Modo is a nice big step up, But if your a XSI'er it's only got the odd thing here and there that are interesting.

Zbrush Now that's at must buy for a XSI'er :buttrock:

Modo is quite innovative but I still find XSI faster... I'd get Zbrush or Silo.

Ive used modo, and really found nothing special about it. Ill have to go with what everyone else has said, check out silo or zbrush. Even better, they all have demos, so check them out and see how you like them. XSI is good for me though :)

Thx for the inputs gentlemen. I haven't tried zbrush yet, but it seems everyone is very positive about it. I'm going to download a demo version and give it a try.

Cheers,
Felipe

Unfortunatly ZB 2 doesnt have a demo....

there is absolutely no need for any other poly modeling package if you have xsi since it has a pretty complete modeling toolset. i'd also go with zbrush 2.

I agree with you sheep factory the tool set in XSI is very good.........but the workflow.....is not....its getting there ,the workflow in modo is soooo smooth, this is for organic modelling ,and the implementaion of Falloffs and the like is very nice, funnily enough it just feels very organic, Depends what ,and how much you do ,if modeling is not your main job, then dont bother but if your making a living at it,i would try the demo . I have always found software loyalty a bit strange......just want the best tools ,with the best work flow, and the nicest interface I dont care who makes them(as long as there a reasonably morraly ok company)
at the end of the day ,its what your comfortabale with........however being comfortable doesnt mean your useing the best tools.....errr... i think....maybe

Rob you're lucky I left London, otherwise I would have challenged you on a modeling session because of all this modo and workflow non-sense :D
too much LW has left a scar on you ;)

HAHA .....hows OZ........Mr J.................Maybe ....maybe i am scarred.....and I am no XSI modelling master......however ,things like whatever view your in just hitting the keypad to swap between Wireframe ,shaded textured ....seems better than having to go to a drop down all the time ,just double click on an edge selects the loop, hit the arrows to move onto the next loop,Change the size of the vertex in your view, change how strong the wireframe is,Move element tool ,picks whatever element you click on(vertex Edge Poly) ,and my current Bugbear with XSI ,hide your geometry, then hit grow selection....and in xsi it selects the hidden geometry, what was the point of hiding it,it stays hidden in MODO and you cant select it(thought that was the point of hiding it)etc, etc, these are all little things...but they add up
I would like to say that I have both tools ,just prefer MODO(at the moment) for Poly modelling....I know i need help.....forgive me...........
I'm a bad person...........shhhhhhhh....there coming........

seriously speaking, I'm sure there are quite a few upsides, my personal experience with modo though has been quite bad for other reasons.
some ideas in the workflow are not bad at all, but I find it nothing short of ridiculous that a SW born in 2004 and only does ONE thing has some serious stability issues, a flawed scene structure, lack of history, lack of hybrid geometry types, flakey subdivisions, massively swinging performance issues for no apparent reason, no solid scripting language to write my own tools etc.

I can live with having to write a 4 lines script to switch viewports in an app that doesn't have by default on a shortcut, I tend to shy away from something that goes down every other hour while simply modeling with polys.

I also know for sure a couple of the issues you've mentioned are being worked on by Soft, as I know Lux is going to do something with this siggy, and so is pixologic.

probably worth waiting for a month before taking turning corner decisions I guess.
