View Full Version : Too many brushes...
manard 07-05-2005, 09:09 PM Hello.
I have a copy of Painter 8, but I am literally overwhelmed by the number of brushes.
Time ago, I tried a copy of Painter 6 for the mac, with which I felt much more at ease and my creativity sprung easily and happily. Clicking and choosing the brush or pencil was easy and 'unnoticed'. Now, with my copy of 8, I'm stuck. I've used it 2 times in a year. Too much clicking on the tools menu, difficult to choose the right brush, changing color... if it keeps the kind of brush on 'myDrawer', it doesn't keep the size, must save on disk.... uffff....
Any hint?
thank you very much

Well I don't know if this helps or not but if you choose a type of medium then choose the brush that you like for it then drag the medium icon out on the the area where the windows open up a custom window will open up and you just repeat this with other mediums that you normally use and drag to the same custom window but here is the thing what you drag to the custom window stays the same brush that you chose for it and so you can drag teh same medium but with different brush for it to the custom window. If you close the custom window you can open it again under window->custom pallette->custom 1 or what ever number that is the pallette you use. You can also rename it so it is easier to remember where it is.

This is probably the best advice for this situation.
One importatnt thing to add though: You must install 8.1 patch to enable the custom pallettes. And you cannot install 8.1 on 8 that you have already been using. You must uninstall 8, reinstall it, then immediately install the 8.1 patch before opening the program.

I've tried Painter 8 and 9 but always go back to Painter 6 for it's simplicity and speed. Also, I can work REALLY big in Painter 6 where Painter 9 and Photoshop just crawl with the same file. Creating a custom palette, as already stated, is the only way to work in the later versions of Painter. When I was working in Painter 9, which to me has the same brushes as 8 (minus the Artist Oils I think), I was totaly overwhelmed by the amount of brushes, so I opened a big canvas and just one by one, went through all the brushes and dropped my favorites into a custom palette. It can take a few hours and you can remove brushes from your custom palette by holding down Shift, I believe.
My favorite brush in Painter 6 is the Captured Bristle Brush and I believe it can be found under the Acrylics category in P8 and P9. I also use the 2b Pencil, Digital Airbrush both with grain set to around 90% and a soft eraser which are pretty much the same brushes I use in P6 with just a little tweaking of the opacity to get them to act the same.
