View Full Version : WANTED: Tracking & Stabilizing Techniques
bartrobinson 07-05-2005, 05:47 PM If you had to pick your favorite & fastest method used to track a plate for at least position and rotation, if not scaling as well, average some tracks in order to create a more solid and noise free track, then stabilize that plate using the averaged tracks, what would the process be? Please feel free to mention specific nodes. I'm looking for information leading to nothing but the most solid stabilization. Thanks!

Bart... Just use the tracker... The new tracker when set to stabilize is great provided you can throw a few trackers into the scene to reduce grain jitter.
load footage, add tracker node. Add 3 or more trackers into the node, and track. Set the operation to (un)stabilize, and set to BG only... Viola...

I was hoping you might show up on this one. So you are saying that DF's Tracker automagically performs averaging when more than one tracker exists? Do you know the manner it goes about figuring that average? In otherwords, do you need a certain number of trackers for it to average for certain types of stabilization. Like # of stabilization types + 1 (or more). For example position + rotation (2 types) so 2 + 1 = 3 trackers for the averaging to kick in..... ?
In more general terms, does it matter if trackers are different distances from camera (i.e., is parallax a problem)?

I'm not sure of the math behind the tool, that would be more of a question for the tech dept.
As far as I can tell though, the average is just that... (1+2+3)/3 I've used the stabilization with some paralax, and it seems to average between the forground and background. If you need to get more elaborate with stabilization, you can also do the math on your own in an expression tool, with up to 9 trackers worth of data.

That what I've done so far, but it's slightly tedious with the tracker able to take care of most requests. Thanks for your insights.
