This is my first daily sketch. It isn't finished yet. I have been working on it for about 2 hours. It is based on the common mis-conception that all shapes are either concave or convex - wheras there are also saddle shapes. I imagined that it was like a third sex - the forgotten shape with no other half.

It might be too dark.. oh well. Photoshop CS.. exactly 40 min. (yes I finally timed myself correctly). I interpreted it as see no evil = all lonely.... because I'm deaf... i depend on seeing. You know what I'm trying to say?
John Keates: You have an interesting concept! I like that idea! :D Poor her...

Hello, this is my first daily sketch. I've only been drawing seriously for about two weeks, so it's not pro quality. I had a good idea but finished because I was frustrated that my skills so far can't do what my mind whats to... I need more practice.
Wacom & Photoshop, took maybe an hour an a half.

1 hour, painter then photoshop to fix contrast
http://i11.photobucket.com/albums/a156/SunnyRaining/lonely.jpg
Its my first post here - I've always been a tad shy :) finally had the guts to post. My knowledge of anatomy is next to nothing and I think I need to bring more contrast into the sea of greys. Comments and crits welcome
Anyway fantastic work from everybody:
MichaelMotion: I love how the wind batters the boat - I can almost imagine the storm :)
Lord Dowswell: The mood and linework in your sketches are fantastic!
CSgirl: The brush strokes really give your picture a sense of neglect - poor teddy bear
Amadeus001: Reminds me of haiku and those early mornings in the country where fog just blankets everything and theres just silence. The use of distance really emphasises the lonliness
Lunatek: Don't worry you're not alone (pun not intended), I think I'm in the same boat (pun also not intended XD).

Thanx csgirl!, yeah, I wanted to draw a scared face behind the window, like everybody had forgotten about him, but I thought that was to much.. A ghost could have been cool tho! Ah well...
Thanx Amadeus001! I like yours too, great mood. :)

Amadeus001 - simple & effective
John Keats - excellent how you told the story with the symbolic parts.
MichaelMotion - I like the idea and the stylization
CSGirl - Very impressive. Great mood and feel to the piece. my personal fav.

Michael: nice image, a lonely diver would make it more desolate I think.
DoInferno: look like you inverted the colors, it suits the pic I think. I see a person who is lonely by choice.
Swizzle stick: very effective.
Dimmur: I like the shape of the dragon, the wings need more shadow I think like you did with the body.
Lord Dowswell: excellent sketch, totally love it. Reminds me of my addiction to Carnivale somehow...
Grantman: Great portrait sketch, very touching.
John Keats: Welcome! Great symbolism. She just have to find that someone that is willing to sit on her saddle...
jrainwat: good first attempt. Keep drawing and keep thinking about the basics.
Dreammaster: beautiful sketch, very stylish, love the orange and blue outline.
Rat-Queen: Great emotion on the dog. Welcome to you too.
The Vux: poor guy, haha. Speed will come later, just keep drawing, developing your technique and think about the things you draw.
Novacain: Good sketch and composition.
csgirl: great use of ArtRage. The stuff really looks old and abandoned.
Mats Gustafson: Nice colors. Aww he's sleeping...
Amadeus: cool sketch, very nice distant fog.
Lunatek: not bad mate, good depiction of loneliness.
erilaz: That is funny! I think that's the map used by the character in Novacain's sketch :)
MetaNerd: welcome back, I like the rocks in the forground and the colors. Is that a nuclear explosion?

Hey guys,
I attempted to draw the look that my old husky used to give me when I would leave for school as a kid. About 2 hours Photoshop.
http://wharris.net/images/husky.jpg
I really really need to be drawing more and draw different things. This daily sketch is really helping with that. This is the first animal I've ever drawn, and the first couch I've ever drawn lol
One quick question: I'm using 2 different monitors at work/school right now: a laptop flat panel and a dell flatscreen. They are showing two completely different color images. The laptop is showing the couch as a cool blue-gray and the flatscreen is showing the couch as a warm gray like a prismacolor marker. Are either one of these close to what you guys are getting? If not I might have to switch back to a CRT monitor.

Hey, Lunatek! Welcome to the DSG! The secret to this whole art thing is to keep practicing, and never give up. No matter how many times you chunk your pencil/wacom across the room, just pick it back up and practice some more.

Microsoft Acryllic; Tiny bit of Xara; Shading and post-processing in GIMP
Total time 2 hours.

This was an an experiment in back-lighting -- and a bit more jolly than I had originally intended; The roosting thing needs to be more depressed, I think.
MichealMotion, good color and detail work on the boards and window
Lord Dowswell, excellent use texture with a limited palette;
Rat~Queen, welcome -- Very nice take and composition, although the rope might be penetrating the tree trunk just off frame(?)
Novacaine, loose and sketchy feel, interesting subject. Fading to green on the horizon gives an almost underwater effect which contrasts well with the sand
csgirl, good lighting, bear seems fuzzy, subtle cobweb and dust particles in the light are effective
Amadeus001, landscape is well done, planes remain interesting even as they become indistinct
Slybone, for a first animal you have captured the pose very well! The shading the the couch is also well done.

DoInferno: look like you inverted the colors, it suits the pic I think. I see a person who is lonely by choice.
I didnīt invert colors. I painted the figures using bright colors over a black background... The result were not what i was imagining but it was an interesting experiment...

Yup, didn't want it to be too obvious... you know... ...:scream:SUBTLE!!!
Thanks it has been along time. This is my second painting since I've been back. I will git the hang of it again.... hopefully sooner than later.

Words of true wisdom Amadeus001. With patience(the hardest part) and a fantastic forum like this one, I'm so happy to be a 'little' frustrated! Now I got go to glue my Wacom back together... ;)
There are many good pieces in this thread.

I found this thing I did a couple of months ago that suits the topic. I think I spent about half an hour on it.
there's a little person on the edge of the cliff there, just in case you didn't noticed it.

Rat~Queen- now that is sad.
Novicane- I have always loved your style. I can always tell it is one of your paintings :)
TheDagger- That is a great concept.. Even though it is a just a flower.. it seems to have personality, like it is acutally sad and lonely.
:) everyone else you are great too! :)

Me too, It was very difficult for me to leave it red. I played with it in photoshop but nothing kept the same mood so I didn't change a thing. Thanks for the words. ;?)
