There is a version of Maya called Personal Edition which appears to be a FREE download which when compared to the normal price tag is amazing, so my question is: Is it even worth considering?

Has anyone used it? What are the limitations? Is it a good-ramp up to the full blown version.

Here is the URL for anyone interested:
http://www.aliaswavefront.com/en/Tmpl/Maya/html/index.jhtml?page=/en/Community/Special/maya_ple/index.jhtml&style=normal

The following URL is the FAQ which talks about the differences, but it doesn't mean much to a newbie, can someone explain these drawbacks:

Thanks...

Maya PLE is a fully functional version of Maya than can save files. It ha sit's own PLE binary file format so you cannot export your work to other versionofd Maya and thus not use it for commericals purposes. The GUI and renders are watermarked as well.

The Maya Personal Learning edition is a 95-percent-functional version of Maya Complete 4.0. They've gimped some features that export files, mainly so you can't dodge the watermark that that PLE places on all renders and GUI.

The watermark falls into that rare category of 'Hateful Ugly'.

So if you can put up with the obnoxious watermark, its a very useful resource to use to learn Maya. I find it unworkable, however.

Rumor has it that the PLE of Maya 4.5 will have the GUI watermark removed. That'll significantly increase the useability of the product.

Does anyone have a pic of the watermark?

Which is worse: The watermark on the rendered image or the watermark in the GUI
