Im putting together a new VFX reel. I dont currently have a digital cam-corder. I was planning on extracting sections from dvd movie footage and using that. Now, i dont mean LOTR, lol...just general footage from a film, tracking it and using it, and ofcourse crediting it.

Ive seen a few threads about this. I was wondering what people thought about the moral/legal issues with this? Im not showing it commercialy, its just for my private showreel. I know i can do quite alot with stills, but i really need some animation shots in there too.

What do people think?

Well, I don't know if it's legally advicable, but I'd say it's a gray area - ripping off happens in this world, so some people might think you're trying to give yourself credit for a movie you didn't work on or something, even if that's not your intention.

So, because of that I wouldn't do it if I were you.

Cheers,

If you get in touch with the production company, they will sometimes give you the rights to rebroadcast as long as its not for profit. Really depends on where the footage is from though...some folks might ask you to license it for a fee or even pay royalties...

So yeah, don't do it unless you get permission from the copyright holders.

On the other hand, there's tons of footage out there where you don't need to worry about copyright issues. Check out the Moving Images section of www.archive.org for some good public domain stuff...
