View Full Version : Increasing render times on a G4
DannyB 10-23-2002, 07:27 PM Hi y'all
I wonder if anyone could give me a few pointers as to how I can maximise my G4 for speed of rendering, I have already upgraded my ram. Could anyone recommend a graphics card which would dramatically increase my speed in C4D. I am currently running a 533mhz G4 with 512mb.
any ideas will be greatfully appreciated.

The graphics card is used to show the thing you're working on on your monitor, so a faster card with more graphics ram can be very handy whilst working, but the rendering calculations are done by the processing unit and the way it interacts with your ram , hdd etc.
I don't know whether one can buy a faster processor for a mac or not, but as far as I know, the real solution to your problem will be found there.
Doubling the processor speed gives a noticeable difference, but really dramatic improvement...I'm afraid that one gets used to everything, so the initial enthusiasm will inevitably cool down after a while. A while back, your mac was state of the art, remember? Was it yesterday? Ahh time keeps on slippin'...

what system are you using? i have a Dual G4 with 2x1GHz and 1 GByte Ram. it is already a pretty fast machine, no doubt, but noticed a good improve in speed when i installed Jaguar. It seems that apples newest system finally learned how to make use of the full processor-potential

I am running os 9.2, will that make a major difference?

yeah, i would say so! loading or rendering a fully textured (about 20 MBytes) scene with OS 9 takes longer than with OS X...
also guardshading is much faster on my machine when running OS X
i still use 9 for freehand and stuff like this, but for 3D (modelling and animating) i always switch to OS X
