View Full Version : Leaving "tracks" on "terrain"

I'm trying to find the best way to do this:

I have a vehicle and a high polygon terrian (it's actually a DEM file so I really need to use it). I need my vehicle to leave tire tracks on my terrain. Any suggestions?

I thought this might be a Paint FX situation at first, however I do have to account that I have a high poly terrain.

If anyone knows of a better and more effient way, please let me know :)

I would do it with compositing.
One version without the tracks, and one with the complete track.
And then composite with masks.

Maybe not the best solution, but it works.

Maybe a displacement map revealed by a ramp? This would be an "in Maya" solution, but probably more problematic than just comping it.

I think there is a tutorial on the www.aliaswavefront.com site that shows how to make the ground a softbody surface so that it deforms as your character crosses over it.

I agree with gmask. Softbodies is the way to go. Obdviously, though, you don't want to make all of the terrain a softbody since I doubt if you'll be driving all over it. Your best bet is to chop out the chunk that will be driven over and make it the softbody.

In fact.....*digging around in my files*.....I have a mediocre example I did in school that should illustrate the point.

You can see the playblast here:

Here is a render from the shot:

I was messing around with creating a snow shader. I obviously never got it to look quite right.....but I digress.

Ask if you have any questions on how to set it up.

Good luck!

Wow, I was just on my way here to post this exact question, only in relation to foot prints. Will have to have a look on the A|W site then.

wind-fan setting, attached to the soles of the feet that blow towards the soft body ground plane works great for me. although i would love to hear tips on making say a muddy ground bunch up creating a lip around the foot. if that makes sense.
