View Full Version : V-Ray Displacement Question
FryGuy982 07-03-2005, 03:55 AM I'm still very new to displacement maps and even newer to vray so I was wondering if someone could help me out by answering this question. When using a zbrush displacement map in vray how do you know what value to set the shift / amount sliders to? Is there a way a general set of rules for using them or is it just guesstimating?

I am not a zbrush user but I know Vray quite well. As I am doing Arch. Viz mostly I usually apply it for carpets/grass etc. About what values to set it, depeds from the scale your are working.
Start with the default setting do a test render and then increase/decrease it as you like. There is a tutorial in www.evermotion.org (http://www.evermotion.org) about Vray displacement that you might find it usefull.
I know I am not giving you a strait answer but maybe you will find your solution there.

general rule of thumb is to have a positive amount and negative half that number as the shift value.
you might get better support for this at the vray forum though, check out this link (http://www.chaosgroup.com/forum/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=7368) for some info:
For me the following procedure works best:
I make a note of the AlphaGain of the Displacement Map in Zbrush, then open the exported .obj in a text editor and make a note of the Autoscale value. Usually it equals 1.
I calculate the displacement values as follows:
Displace value = AlphaGain / Autoscale
Shift value = -(Displacement value / 2)
Hope this helps,
Andrea

Boa: This give accurate results? If it does, nice found man!
But my way of doing this is quite simple and gives pretty nice results. Just enable the "enable color map" for the zbrush displace bitmap and set the first control point of the curve to -1. Doing so will make the black color be negative displacement, and you will not need to use the shift value...now it's just a matter of setting the right amount of displacement, but for this you will need to try some values...
This is the best tecnique in my opinion since it really gives an almost perfect result and works for any renderer, you can even test with the displace modifier to see in the viewports...
Hope this helps...
