View Full Version : NVidia's latest drivers
Dion Burgoyne 07-01-2005, 10:01 PM Greetings,
We were just made aware of a new set of drivers from NVidia Version 77. These are NOT recommended... Within a few minutes of testing them openGL had serious framerate and updating problems. We are working with NVidia to solve this issue. Driver level 71.83 is the latest recommended drivers.
Thanks!
Dion

Been running Modo with v77 for a few days now and it appears to be fine. There's been no negligable difference for better or worse.
I'm running w2k service pack 4, Pentium4 2.6ghz and QuadroFX 1000.

Running the 77.72 drivers that came with the game Battlefield 2...no problems at all on this machine.
Windows XP Pro + Service Pack 2
Nforce 2 Ultra
1.5GB RAM
FX5900 Ultra 77.72
Modo 102

I was getting a one minute hang every 5-10 minutes.
There was a 33% chance that the hang would crash modo once you got out of it anyways.
I had access to the 77.62 beta drivers and they had the EXACT same problem the 77.72 drivers have.
I've got a GeForce 6800 thing btw.

Unless its something with the 6xxx series of nvidia cards maybe? I did revert back to older drivers today when HL2 couldnt detect a valid DX card thanks to the drivers though...so it seems be it modo or gaming, one will give you problems with them.

well, since you asked nicely...............
ATI has never been much into supporting OpenGL properly. I can go all the way back to the ATI Rage Fury card as being an awful choice for 3D usage, and they have done nothing to improve the situation.
Maya users are frequent complainers that they have viewport issues and such "you do? what video card do you have" "Oh I have a Radeon 9800" "Ah, that is your problem" is usually how those go.
with as frequent as those kinds of posts are, I am just surprised you haven't run across it before.

We are talking about the Quadro FX drivers right.

Many people have mentioned concerns with ATI driver problems, but those pertain mainly to Maya users. Many of them have opted for NVIDIA when using Maya. This seems to apply to Messiah too. However, Lightwave doesn't seem to have any conflicts with ATI. As for modo, I'm using an ATI card, and it seems to crash quite unexpectedly, and quite often actually. Not sure if it's really the card, or it's my computer's configuration. I'm currently using a laptop with Pentium 1.4M, ATI 9600 Radeon, 1G Ram for these programs.
P.S. Maya doesn't seem to crash on my laptop, even with my ATI card, and my viewport seems to work just fine.

Hmm... can't find the 71.83's anywhere (not even on www.guru3d.com (http://www.guru3d.com)) are you sure you don't mean the 71.84's (http://www.nvidia.com/object/winxp_2k_71.84.html) Dion..?

If you look around you'll find a decent share of complaints with LW as well.

Hi Madmax, I'm sure there are complaints from LW users regarding ATI drivers conflict, and I personally have LW crashes appearing occasionally :P However, the complaints are far less than Maya users. I remember asking a tech friend of mine regarding which video card to get should I get a new comp, and his advice was that if I was to use Maya as my main app, then go fo Nvidia for lesser problems. And asking around, I found out that ATI/LW users doesn't seem to suffer as much compared to ATI/Maya users.
But again, suffering from any software instability is always frustrating for anyone...

Me too, plus a notice i could have bigger scene file while still getting great frame rate. driver 77.18, QuadroFX 1000.

LW is not relying that much on OGL extensions in hardware as other 3D packages do, so it is this reason that normally LW doesnīt give you much trouble at all with viewport hardware acceleration. But compared to others it is somewhat slow in viewport rendering, especially going to SubDīs is a pain on older systems with LW. And the big pack of the major CAD-Packages are longing for a nvidia card, doesnīt matter if itīs a quadro or geforce, they run awesome with nvidia cards. But ATI is working on better OGL performance and all their latest catalyst releases were a major step in OGL stability and performance, at least for their newer cards.

Thanks for the info, loop29 :)
I remember the older days when ATI cards were causing so much problems, before the 9000 series came out. My roommate was having crashes doing his 3D school project (we were using Maya 2.0 back then), and ATI never seemed to update their drivers at all (not to mention all the problems with 3D games too). But nowadays, ATI drivers seems to be really stable, and ATI is investing a lot to compete with NVIDIA. With NVIDIA now trying to gain a foothold in the video card industry, I hope that all these competition will make them come out with better cards with optimised drivers for us consumers :)
