I got many problems with max 5, but this one is the most annoying for me:

when I render some of my scenes I got the traditional error message saying "an error as occured....." just after the rendering is finished

so I tried the brazil renderer to see if it's max's scanline that cause thi prob, but it did the same, then I tried Vray and fortunately and in spite of a different (and typical to vray) error message it worked.

I 'm obliged to use Vray for this reason, but I need to use the standar max's renderer. so if someone has had the same problem, let me now, please

I never had this problem with the same scene with max 4.2 wich is still installed on same machine.

I'm highly suspecting a bad memory managing of max 5.
my machine is a SGI 550 workstation with 512 ecc memory, I think it's enough, isn't it?

I would try merging all the scene components into a new and "clean" max file. If that doesn't work i would try to apply a standard material to all the scene. If that doesn't work i would try to find the "geometry-what-so-ever" bug. If that doesn't work i would blame max :)
